Investing.com — Chinese automaker BYD Co. has surpassed Tesla Inc. in UK sales, establishing a significant lead in one of Europe’s largest markets for electric vehicles.
According to data released Wednesday by the UK’s automotive trade group, BYD registered nearly seven times more new cars than Tesla in October. Year-to-date figures show BYD’s sales have increased more than sixfold to 39,103 vehicles, while Tesla’s registrations have declined 4.5% to 35,455.
The rapid growth marks a dramatic shift from last year when BYD registered only 8,788 cars in the UK, with Tesla outselling the Chinese manufacturer by an almost 6-to-1 margin. This transformation has occurred in the UK market, which overtook Germany in 2024 as Europe’s leading market for fully electric vehicles.
With the latest sales increase, the United Kingdom has become BYD’s largest market outside of China.
