@niche: Morgan celebrates 25 years of successful partnership with BMW004192

Morgan is celebrating a landmark moment in its modern history: 25 years of technical partnership and engine supply from BMW, reflecting a strong and enduring relationship between the two marques. BMW power has been a defining feature of Morgan sports cars for more than two decades, its characterful performance underpinning both the company’s current four-wheeled lineup and a number of iconic models throughout the last quarter of a century. As Morgan continues to shape its next generation of coachbuilt sports cars, BMW power will remain an integral part of the driving experience.

The longstanding relationship between Morgan and BMW began with the launch of the Aero 8 in 2000 and has since spanned decades of engineering collaboration. To honour the occasion, Morgan has gathered 14 of the most significant BMW-powered Morgan sports cars from the past quarter of a century, bringing them together for the first time in a single, evocative display.

From the original Aero 8, unveiled at the Geneva International Motor Show in 2000, through to Morgan’s recently introduced flagship, Supersport, the curated line-up traces a journey of technical progress and shared ambition. Alongside these bookend models are a number of pivotal BMW-powered Morgans, each representing a moment of evolution in performance, efficiency, and dynamic capability.

The 14-car display features almost every BMW powertrain to have appeared in a Morgan over the last 25 years. It begins with the 4.4-litre M62 V8 of the first-generation Aero 8, followed by the 4.4-litre N62 V8 used in Aero 8 Series 2 and Series 3 models and the distinctive AeroMax. Also showcased is the final chapter in Morgan’s 50-year V8 story: the 4.8-litre BMW N62, which powered later Aero models and the Plus 8. This engine made its last appearance in core production in 2018 with the final Plus 8 built at Pickersleigh Road, before concluding entirely with a run of nine motorsport-inspired Plus 8 GTRs in 2021 — commission six of nine features in the display.

More recently, BMW power has taken the form of the 3.0-litre B58 TwinPower Turbo inline six-cylinder and 2.0-litre B48 TwinPower Turbo inline four-cylinder engines. First introduced on the Plus Six in 2019, the B58 became both the first inline six-cylinder and the first turbocharged engine fitted to a Morgan. Its arrival coincided with the development of Morgan’s all-new CX platform — designed and engineered in-house to deliver twice the torsional stiffness of previous aluminium architectures while remaining under 100kg. Representing a major step forward, the CX platform ushered in modern performance, refinement, and capability without compromising the timeless proportions of the Morgan silhouette.

The B58 also powers Midsummer, Morgan’s coachbuilt barchetta revealed in May 2024 and created in collaboration with Pininfarina. Midsummer reflects a shared focus on design integrity and coachbuilding expertise, expressed through its sculptural form and exposed, teak-surrounded cockpit. In this setting, the smooth, responsive performance of the BMW inline-six enhances the car’s open, immersive driving environment. Production of the final examples of the 50 bespoke commissions is now underway at Pickersleigh Road, with completion expected in early 2026.

The introduction of the B58 was followed in 2020 by the B48, launched on the all-new Plus Four. As the latest in a 75-year lineage of four-cylinder engines powering the model, the BMW B48 delivers an understated, effortless performance well suited to the car’s character. Its composed nature affords drivers the freedom to enjoy both spirited B-road journeys and the unhurried pleasures of slow motoring.

Earlier this year, Plus Four returned to the United States — the first four-wheeled Morgan officially offered in the market since the early 2000s. Morgan’s ongoing partnership with BMW was instrumental in achieving this milestone. Plus Four is homologated under the replica car rule of the FAST Act, enabling the company to recreate a model sold in the United States more than 25 years ago. To meet requirements across all states, Morgan and BMW worked together to certify an engine package compliant with SPMV regulations for CARB states. This package centres around the B46 engine, a SULEV-compliant version of the 2.0-litre B48 used in all other markets.

Morgan’s four-wheeled range has exclusively used BMW power since 2020, the latest model to join the line-up is Supersport, revealed in March 2025. Supersport introduces a new design language for Morgan — a contemporary interpretation of the brand’s timeless silhouette — and is powered by the 3.0-litre BMW B58 six-cylinder paired with the evolved CXV platform. Representing Morgan’s most dynamically capable model to date, Supersport combines lightweight construction, driver-focused engineering, and the engine’s immediate, compelling performance to elevate the Morgan driving experience to new levels of engagement and precision.

Two further vehicles within the 14-car display highlight Morgan’s motorsport heritage and BMW’s role within it. BMW engines powered the early Aero 8 GT racing programme, including entries at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and campaigns in the FIA GT3 European Championship. Representing this era is Morgan’s 2004 Aero 8 LMGT Le Mans entrant. Alongside it sits a 2020 Plus Four race car operated in partnership with the University of Wolverhampton’s School of Engineering and racing team, supporting the development of future motorsport engineers and providing a valuable testbed for component evaluation.

Collectively, the 14-car line-up stands as an illustration of the breadth and evolution of Morgan design over the past 25 years. It also reflects the flexibility of the company’s 21st-century coachbuilding approach and the skill of the craftspeople who have built these cars at Pickersleigh Road.

“BMW has been a trusted technical partner to Morgan for a quarter of a century, and we are immensely proud of what we have achieved together. The collaboration between Morgan and BMW continues to be a cornerstone of Morgan’s engineering and product identity. BMW’s engines have consistently delivered the reliability, performance, and character that support the Morgan driving experience, helping to deliver undiluted driving joy for the past 25 years. It is a partnership built on this shared value, as we combine our handcrafted production, individuality, and driver-focused engineering, with BMW’s exceptional powertrain technology.”

Matthew Hole, Managing Director, Morgan Motor Company

Across 25 years of continued design and engineering progress, BMW’s reliable, efficient, and characterful powertrains have remained a constant — enabling each model to deliver an unmistakably Morgan driving experience and supporting ongoing innovation in lightweight, coachbuilt performance. In that time, Morgan has become BMW’s longest-standing OEM engine partner, with almost 5,000 engines supplied for installation at Pickersleigh Road. Today, Morgan’s B48 and B58 engines are assembled at BMW Group Plant Steyr, Austria.

BMW powertrains have helped define Morgan’s modern dynamic identity — delivering engaging, responsive performance and enabling the company to continue its distinctive approach to coachbuilding contemporary sports cars. As Morgan looks ahead, the partnership with BMW provides a stable and highly capable technical foundation, underscoring a shared commitment to delivering ultimate driving joy.
