I had some fun digging into EV sales data and charts from EU-EVs.com recently. But one of our readers did me one better. In response to one of those articles, Steve Jenkins responded with the following comment:

I thought I would do an annual comparison for the 13 markets covered by EU-EVs with the 1,2,3 positions.
Two points, in 2017 there were only 9 countries covered and 2025 is YTD
2017 — Total market 98k1. Renault-Nissan 27.7%, 2. Tesla 23%, 3. VW Group 14.7%
2018 — Total market 149k1. Renault-Nissan 32.9%, 2. Tesla 16.6% 3. VW Group 15%
2019 — Total market 287k1. Tesla 32.8%, 2. Renault-Nissan 18.3%, 3. VW Group 16%
2020 — Total market 567k1. VW Group 28.3%, 2. Tesla 14.6%, 3. Renault-Nissan 14.6%
2021 — Total market 1.01m1. VW Group 27%, 2. Tesla 13.4%, 3 Stellantis 13%
2022 — Total market 1.31m1. VW Group 23.8%, 2. Tesla 14.8%, 3. Stellantis 14%
2023 — Total market 1.59m1. VW Group 24.3%, 2. Tesla 16.7%, 3. Stellantis 11.8%
2024 — Total market 1.52m1. VW Group 23.5%, 2. Tesla 16.1%, 3. BMW Group 10%
2025 YTD — Total market 1.83m1. VW Group 29.9%, 2. BMW Group 9.1%, 3. Tesla 9.1%
Two things stand out, the very rapid growth in the total market — it has tripled from 2020 to 2025 and the domination of the VW Group since 2020 when it introduced the VW ID3 and ID4.

Quite a fascinating shift in auto group leaders, eh? And it’s fun looking at how the total EV market grew in that time as well. It may feel at times like things are going too slow, and the EV transition is being delayed, but that’s some impressive and important growth in overall sales.
Aside from Steve’s remarks, I also found it particularly interesting seeing Renault-Nissan’s decline and Tesla’s decline.
