SMMT statement on the Commission on UK Gigafactories report
Attracting investment in UK battery production and vehicle manufacturing is essential if we are to restore the sector to a 1.3 million vehicle manufacturing hub by 2035 – a key Industrial Strategy ambition.
To do that we need competitive conditions – which the Gigafactory Commission rightly recommends – with measures to reduce energy costs, support upskilling and invest in domestic critical materials manufacturing and recycling.
We must now turn shared ambitions into a reality which would see economic growth, jobs and Net Zero achieved while safeguarding Britain’s reputation as a location of choice for cutting edge automotive design, development and production.
