VDL Nedcar workers threaten strike over compulsory Saturday overtime

Workers at the VDL Nedcar car plant in Limburg are threatening to go on strike after the company said it would introduce compulsory overtime on Saturdays, news agency ANP said.

Minis and BMWs are made at the plant, but there is a backlog of some 2,000 vehicles due to earlier strikes, the summer break and, according to staff, assembly line breakdowns.

The company now wants to introduce compulsory Saturday overtime in September in a bid to catch up. The plan now involves each worker doing two half shifts, which is less than the company first indicated, but workers are still unhappy, ANP said.

Workers at the plant have already been striking together with other engineering sector staff in support of a pay claim.
