WolfsburgVolkswagen want that sluggish expansion of charging infrastructure for electric cars accelerate with mobile fast charging stations. The pillar can be placed in public parking lots or company premises – the fast loading takes on average 17 minutes, said the VWGroup division of the component plants with.

The first mobile charging stations were to be set up in the first half of 2019 for a pilot project in Wolfsburg. From 2020, the pillar that will continue to use older batteries from electric cars should also be used in other cities. The column with a capacity of 360 kilowatt hours can be said to be installed independently from the mains, but can also be charged via alternating current.

This makes it possible to temporarily store solar or wind energy. Up to 15 electric cars could recharge their batteries in operation without a power connection. If the energy falls below 20 percent, the emptied charging station can be exchanged for a charged one. The locations of the columns could be found by app.

Thomas Schmall, CEO of the VW Group component, spoke of a “decisive step towards a powerful network of charging points”. This is a completely new approach to the rapid expansion of infrastructure. Their insufficient expansion is considered a major obstacle to the expansion of electric mobility – in addition to the high price of cars and the still limited range.

In the new Components division, which forms a separate unit in the VW Group from January 2019, the car manufacturer bundles its in-house supplies for engines, transmissions, chassis or steering systems. The division brings together 56 factories with around 80,000 employees worldwide. German locations are about Baunatal near Kassel, Brunswick and Salzgitter.
