TOKYO, Feb. 5 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi automotive alliance is studying a possible partnership with Google for the development of autonomous taxis and other services that use autonomous driving vehicles.

According to the Japanese publication ‘Nikkei’, under the agreement, car manufacturers will work with Waymo, the autonomous driving technology company of Alphabet (Google’s parent company). The agreement would be in its final phase and the companies plan to make it public in the spring.

Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi already signed with Google in September of the year a global technological agreement to integrate the Android operating system in its vehicles and thus offer intelligent infotainment services and applications for its customers. It is expected that with the agreement, which will begin in 2021, there will be an increase in sales of more than 14 million units by the end of 2022.

The plan already announced also includes the launch of 12 new zero-emission electric vehicles, new autonomous driving technologies and the deployment of the Intelligent Cloud Alliance, which will provide a platform to integrate the data management, information and entertainment systems and to facilitate remote diagnostics and updates.

Waymo launched at the end of 2018 its first commercial service with autonomous cars in Phoenix (United States). The service will charge individual passengers for trips and companies, such as Walmart, who want to pay to take their customers to stores.
