Comment: VW should accommodate German diesel customers

It is a huge number: a good 28 billion euros has the Volkswagen Group now have to cover the diesel affair. Other companies would have been in deep crisis in the face of such a burden. But it is included Volkswagen nothing to see. The Group earned 17 billion euros in operating business last year, slightly more than in the previous twelve months.

This shows what entrepreneurial substance is in this group. In other words, VW produces cars that customers really want to buy and drive. The economic success can not be explained otherwise.

Volkswagen is no longer just driving this economic success in Germany on. Much more important has become for the auto company, what happens in the rest of the world. This is particularly true with regard to China, where VW sells about four million vehicles every year.

The exhaust gas affair is in the first place a topic in this country. Of course, German motorists are annoyed that a US customer gets thousands of dollars compensation, but they go out empty. However, there are differences: In the United States the manipulated diesel vehicles have disappeared from the streets. These cars have lost their registration and the customers had to return them. This is very different in Europe, the cars may continue to be used.

Angry customers are no basis for good business, VW knows that too. The group needs its customers all the more because of the upcoming electrification. The need would be great, customers would not buy the new electric cars.

For financial reasons VW can not afford to compensate millions of European customers as generously as US motorists. But the billions in profits are not enough. But some kindness to German customers would help. VW also benefits from a new relationship of trust.
