GM Delivers 813,973 Vehicles in China in the First Quarter

2019-04-12

SHANGHAI – General Motors and its joint ventures delivered 813,973 vehicles in China in a challenging first quarter for the industry.

Despite the challenging environment, GM remained focused on delivering excellent products in the quarter:

Cadillac deliveries totaled 44,684 units. The XT4 SUV, Cadillac’s newest product in China, continued to gain in popularity.
Buick had deliveries of 225,313 units, supported by strong sales of the Regal sedan as well as the GL6 and GL8 MPV family.
Chevrolet deliveries totaled 112,382 units, led by the Cavalier and Malibu sedans. It launched the Monza sedan, its first new product in 2019, on March 21.
Baojun sold 169,380 vehicles. The Baojun 510 has been the top-seller in the small SUV segment for 24 consecutive months. The Baojun E100 and E200 electric vehicles are among the leading new energy vehicles sold in China.
Wuling deliveries totaled 262,214 units, as the brand maintained its dominant position in the mini-commercial vehicle segment. It launched three upgraded models in March from the best-selling Hong Guang family to strengthen its foothold in passenger vehicles.

GM is going through a major model changeover in China this year, as it aims to continuously improve the fuel efficiency of its vehicles and broadly apply its global technologies on models built and sold locally.

GM also continues to fulfill its commitment to a zero-emissions future. Following the earlier introduction of the Baojun E100 and E200 electric vehicles and the Buick VELITE 5 extended-range electric vehicle, Buick will launch its first all-electric vehicle – the VELITE 6 – this month in China. This will enable GM to cater to the rapidly growing demand for new energy vehicles.

Upcoming Products

GM plans to introduce about 20 new and refreshed models in the domestic market in 2019, with a sharpened focus on the luxury vehicle and midsize/large SUV segments. The record number of launches represent the company’s strongest product mix ever in the market.

Buick started sales of the all-new LaCrosse premium sedan and LaCrosse Avenir flagship sedan on March 29. The LaCrosse has been a key entry in the Buick lineup in China, its largest market, since 2006. More than 1.2 million units have been sold over the years, making it a leader among premium sedans. The all-new Encore and Encore GX SUVs will have their global debut at this month’s Auto Shanghai 2019.

Chevrolet will continue to expand its portfolio and move to a higher mix through the ongoing launch of all-new products, including sporty Redline variants. The first crossover from Chevrolet’s new global vehicle family, the Tracker, will debut at the Shanghai auto show this month and go on sale later in the second quarter.

Cadillac will introduce the upgraded XT5 in May and the XT6 in July to help strengthen its position in luxury SUVs. Cadillac House opened in Shanghai last month to provide consumers an immersive experience in the brand’s heritage, technologies, craftsmanship and cultural influence.

Baojun is pivoting toward a more youthful, connected and intelligent brand direction to appeal to rising consumer aspirations. Leading the charge is the Baojun RS-5 SUV, which was launched on April 11. It has a full suite of advanced safety features and industry-leading in-vehicle connectivity, and is the first of a new series of Baojun vehicles that will be adorned with a new diamond-shaped logo.
