Velodyne is taking a leadership role in not only advancing lidar technology but also in advocating for autonomous vehicle (AV) community cooperation in addressing safety and standardization requirements for lidar sensors.
Writing in Autonomous Vehicle International, Dieter Gabriel, marketing manager, Velodyne Europe, detailed Velodyne’s latest lidar sensors and discussed Velodyne’s call for the AV community to work together to identify requirements and methods for lidar sensor testing and validation.
The piece examined the VelaDome™, a compact embeddable lidar that provides an ultra-wide 180° x 180° image for near-object avoidance, and the Velarray™, the company’s long-range directional lidar solution for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) applications.
Gabriel also made the case for the AV community to prove to customers that lidar sensors meet the stringent safety, performance, and reliability requirements for vehicle autonomy and ADAS. He quoted Dr. Mircea Gradu, Velodyne’s Sr. Vice President Quality and Validation, as saying:
“With the AV industry in a nascent stage, now is the time to support the development and testing efforts of automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers by deepening understanding of lidar and applying rigorous sensor validation.”
