Velodyne won a patent challenge brought by competitor Quanergy.
Jan Wolfe of Reuters reported, the “U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s Patent Trial and Appeal Board on May 23 rejected arguments by Quanergy that a Velodyne patent on LiDAR technology was invalid on obviousness grounds.”
In writing about the decision, Yining Chen LEDinside quoted Velodyne Lidar President Marta Hall saying, “Velodyne Lidar is the inventor of the surround view LiDAR and we were confident that our patent would be upheld. The ruling was not a surprise because real-time surround view LiDAR was invented by our Founder, David Hall, and the company holds a number of foundational patents relative to this technology.”
Writing about the news in FutureCar, Eric Walz noted, “ Velodyne Founder and CEO, David Hall, invented surround view lidar systems, revolutionizing perception abilities for autonomous vehicles by using rotating unit, sometimes referred to as a ‘bucket’ to bounce laser beams off objects in a 360 degree field around a vehicle. The lidar technology provides 3D vision, providing ‘eyes’ for robotics and autonomous driving.”
