Vauxhall has confirmed the new Astra will be priced from £18,885 when it goes on sale in UK car dealerships on August 1.
The facelifted model will be offered in five-door hatchback and Sports Tourer bodystyles and introduces a brand-new range of RDE2-compliant engines.
News of the new models’ specification comes in a week when its future production at the PSA Group-owned carmaker’s Ellesmere Port factory are in doubt.
AM reported yesterday (July 29) how PSA Group chairman and chief executive, Carlos Tavares, has re-stated the French carmaker’s warning that Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port plant could be closed if Brexit makes it unprofitable.
In an interview with the Financial TimesTavares said that Vauxhall, “has another plant in mind” if the conditions of Brexit are “unfavourable”.
For now, the British-built facelifted Astra set to reach showroom early next month will feature powertrains are up to 19% more efficient than the outgoing units.
The range kicks off with a 110PS 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine. There are also more potent 130PS and 145PS versions.
A 1.4-litre three-cylinder petrol is available exclusively with a CVT. It develops 145PS.
There is also a 1.5-litre three-cylinder diesel engine with 105 or 122PS. It is optionally available with a nine-speed automatic.
The 105PS diesel is the most efficient, achieving 64.2mpg (WLTP). The 1.2 manages 54.3mpg and the 1.4 returns 48.7mpg.
Prices start at £20 less than the existing model at £18,885 on-the-road for the 1.2 in SE trim. The Sport Tourer costs £1,500 more.
SE versions are equipped with a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which includes Apple Carplay and Android Auto. It also has Bluetooth, air conditioning and alloy wheels.
The Business Edition is designed for fleet customers and adds sat-nav and a driver’s armrest.
SRI models have LED headlights and sports seats, while Elite adds leather upholstery, heated seats and steering wheel, and eight-inch infotainment screen and a digital instrument cluster.
Range-topping Ultimate versions have a Bose sound system, heated windscreen and active (massaging) front seats.
