UPS has announced it will introduce 50 electric trucks to its US fleet.
Working in partnership with Workhorse Group Inc., the vehicles will be designed from scratch to suit the specific needs of UPS. Workhorse claims the vehicles provide a 400 percent improvement in fuel efficiency, optimum energy efficiency and a better driving experience as well as vehicle performance. With an anticipated vehicle range of 100 miles the vehicles will be optimized for inner-city deliveries, and will be tested in Alanta, Dallas and Los Angeles as a part of its Rolling Lab, which already contains 9,000 alternatively-fuelled vehicles.
Following the test programme UPS and Workhorse plan to develop the design in order to expand the electric fleet in 2019, with 300 pure electric vehicles and close to 700 hybrid vehicles already in operation in Europe and the US. Currently UPS has 35,000 diesel or petrol vehicles in operation, and aims to make one in four of new vehicles purchased either alternatively fuelled or advanced technology by the year 2020.
Carlton Rose, President, Global Fleet Maintenance and Engineering for UPS, said “With our scale and real-world duty cycles, these new electric trucks will be a quantum leap forward for the purpose-built UPS delivery fleet. The all electric trucks will deliver by day and re-charge overnight. We are uniquely positioned to work with our partners, communities and customers to transform freight transportation.”
