GM Canada Delivers Solid Performance in 2019 with Continued Sales Growth in Crossovers, EVs and Trucks

OSHAWA, Ont. (January 3, 2020) — Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac dealers delivered 256,795 vehicles in 2019, including 190,718 retail sales and 66,077 fleet sales. GM Canada’s fourth quarter deliveries totaled 53,186 units with consistent growth in total truck sales.
“We achieved solid year-end results in 2019,” said Sandor Piszar, vice president, sales, service and marketing, GM Canada. “Our fourth quarter saw some significant momentum with pickup sales up from Q4 2018 and Cadillac boasting its best quarter sales results in history.”
“As Canadian consumer preferences shifted significantly toward crossovers, SUVs and pickups in 2019, we remain well positioned for success in 2020 with our full lineup, and several new entries in key growing segments featuring the latest in technology, functionality and design,” Piszar added.
2019 Sales Highlights
The outgoing Chevrolet Corvette laid a foundation of success in 2019 with total sales up 12.2 per cent vs. 2018 ahead of the highly anticipated mid-engine Corvette Stingray, 2020 MotorTrend Car of the Year, which will hit Canadian dealer lots this year.
The Chevrolet Bolt EV had a record sales year with total sales up 55.5 per cent over 2018. Many consumers across the country are turning to electric vehicles, particularly in Quebec, where the Bolt EV had its best sales performance ever.
The Chevrolet Spark also had a record sales year, with total sales up 53.8 per cent over 2018, and Chevrolet Trax total sales were up 105.0 per cent for the quarter and 15.6 per cent for the calendar year.
Buick solidified its place as an SUV-focused brand in 2019 to align with Canada’s largest and fastest growing segment, and Buick Envision sales reflected that focus with total sales up 19.9 per cent for the quarter and 8.6 per cent for the calendar year. Buick Encore total sales were also up 21.7 per cent for the quarter.
GMC Sierra pickups are continuing to catch the attention of Canadian consumers with total sales up 10 per cent in Q4. GMC Yukon total sales were up 9.8 per cent, along with Yukon XL, up 5.1 per cent for the quarter.
Light- and heavy-duty Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra total sales were up 10.9 per cent for the quarter. Light-duty pickup sales specifically saw an increase, up 14.6 per cent for the quarter and 2.9 per cent for the calendar year. A focus on light-duty crew cabs also paid off, with total sales up 10.5 per cent for the quarter and 18.5 per cent for the calendar year.
Specialty models like the GMC AT4 and Denali and Chevrolet Custom TrailBoss and LT TrailBoss have also been making significant waves, becoming the fastest selling editions on the market.
Cadillac posted its best retail Q4 in history, up 26.4 per cent.
