- Board Member for Technical Development Welsch to focus on concepts, design and strategy at Technical Development of Volkswagen Passenger Cars and on steering Research and Development in the Volkswagen Group
Dr. Matthias Rabe, Head of the Technical Development Operations area at the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand, is to take on additional responsibilities in Technical Development at the brand effective February 1, 2020. Under the leadership of Dr. Frank Welsch, Board Member for Technical Development, he will be responsible for steering the Technical Development departments and for the transformation of Technical Development in his role as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Volkswagen Passenger Cars. Rabe takes over these responsibilities from Welsch, who heads Technical Development at the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand and also leads Group Research and Development in his role as CTO of Volkswagen AG. At the brand, Welsch will concentrate on design, concepts and strategy at Technical Development.
Dr. Matthias Rabe (57) holds a doctorate in mechanical engineering and has long-standing experience in several senior management posts in the Volkswagen Group, first as Head of Chassis and Electrical Development in Shanghai, before assuming responsibility for Group Research at Volkswagen AG and subsequently leading Body Development at the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand. He was then appointed Executive Vice-President for Research and Development at SEAT in Martorell before returning to Wolfsburg as Head of the Technical Development Operations area at the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand in March 2019.
