Registrations for electrified, hybrid and gas vehicles drop more than 59% in May

During the fifth month of the year, 6,534 vehicles of these types were delivered in Spain, with a decrease in deliveries of passenger cars of 58% and 6,290 units.

Sales of electrified vehicles rose in nine autonomous communities in May, with very low volumes.

Madrid, June 1, 2020 – Registrations of electrified, hybrid and gas vehicles (passenger cars, ATVs, commercial and industrial vehicles and buses) were reduced in May, due to the impact of the coronavirus crisis, by 59.2 % with respect to the same month of the previous year, with sales in the period of 6,290 units. As for passenger car sales, these deliveries decreased 58%, to 6,534 units.

Among all the vehicle categories, only plug-in hybrids manage to improve their sales compared to the same month last year, although the volume is only 749 units. The greatest impact is attributed to gas vehicle sales, with an 83% drop in deliveries, to 603 units.

In the accumulated index for the year, sales of electrified, hybrid and gas vehicles (passenger cars, ATVs, commercial and industrial vehicles and buses) fell 24.5% to 48,060 units. By categories, plug-in hybrids are also the only ones that manage to maintain an upward trend, with 4,126 units delivered between January and May and a growth of 34%.

By Autonomous Communities, sales of electrified vehicles grew in May in Aragon, the Canary Islands, Cantabria, Castilla La Mancha, Ceuta and Melilla, the Valencian Community, Galicia, Murcia and Navarra. However, the volumes are so low that they fail to lift the falls in markets such as Madrid and Catalonia, those with the highest sales. The commercializations of hybrid vehicles fell in all the Autonomous Communities.

ELECTRIC VEHICLES – Zero Label

Electric vehicle sales decreased 62.7% during May, reaching 438 units registered this month, accumulating a total this year of 4,941 vehicles sold, which is 6% less than the same period last year.

PLUG-IN HYBRID VEHICLES – Zero Label

Sales of plug-in hybrid vehicles, in the fifth month of the year, have reached 749 registered units, 12% more than in the same period last year. In the accumulated index for the year, they reached 4,126 units, 34% more.

GAS VEHICLES – ECO Label

Gas vehicles reached a total of 603 registered units in May, with a significant decrease of 83.1% compared to the same month last year.

HYBRID VEHICLES – ECO Label

Vehicles with non-pluggable hybrid technology reached 4,744 registered units. This type of vehicle has also suffered a recession in its sales, with a decrease of 55.2% in the month of May.

DIESEL AND GASOLINE – Label C

Total market registrations for gasoline (passenger cars, commercial and industrial vehicles, buses and quads) fell by 77% and diesel vehicles fell by 65% ​​during the month of May.
