According to rumors reported by the German magazine Manager Magazin, the Volkswagen group is discussing the sale of Bugatti to the Croatian Rimac within this year. Indiscretions also resumed by the magazine Car magazine, according to which the executives of the German group have approved the operation already last week, even if the approval of the Supervisory Board is still missing.
In the Volkswagen universe there are already relationships with Rimac: Porsche holds a stake having acquired 15.5% between 2018 and 2019. The Bugatti brand, considered by Ferdinand Piƫch a flagship, now appears far from the interests of the Group , which intends to focus on future businesses: electrification, digitalization and autonomous driving. And forging ties with Rimac would mean for the German manufacturer to have access to a very valuable know-how on the electric. The indiscretions of the magazines report that in the project also Bugatti would have a strategy to make it a completely electric brand under the leadership of Rimac.
Rimac is currently developing the C_Two electric hypercar, which is expected to be launched in the first quarter of 2021. There is talk of 1,914 hp, more than the Bugatti Chiron (1,600 hp), which uses an 8.0-liter 16-cylinder petrol. However, to carry out the project Rimac needs structures. And just those of Molsheim of Bugatti could be the case if the sale of the French brand is successful.
