GM Commits Full Support to SGMW’s NEV Development
2020-12-14
LIUZHOU – General Motors will continue to fully support its SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW) joint venture’s innovation and development of new energy vehicles (NEVs), said GM Executive Vice President and GM China President Julian Blissett during a recent visit to the company’s headquarters in Liuzhou, Guangxi.
SGMW has achieved a leading position in EV production and sales with its global small electric vehicle (GSEV) platform, which supports the new Baojun E100, E200, E300, E300 PLUS and Wuling Hong Guang MINI EV through significant economies of scale and flexibility. The Hong Guang MINI EV has accumulated especially robust sales of almost 100,000 units in less than five months since its launch in late July.
SGMW started its exploration of small NEVs in 2014. With strong support from local governments in Guangxi, its first EV program – the new Baojun E100 – was quickly promoted and expanded across the region and beyond. In addition to the GSEV platform for small EVs, SGMW’s flexible drive-mode electric vehicle strategy, which provides one architecture for various vehicle platforms, including EVs, hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), has proved to be fruitful.
“Our NEV portfolio has quickly built up significant bandwidth in China,’’ said Blissett. “We will continue to support our joint ventures in bringing out more electrification solutions to meet the diverse demand of Chinese consumers.”
GM has accelerated its move toward electrification, with more than 10 NEVs launched in China. In the next five years, more than 40% of its new launches in China will be NEVs. They will cover all major segments across the Cadillac, Buick, Chevrolet, Baojun and Wuling lineups by leveraging GM’s third-generation global EV platform and local programs tailor-made for China.
“China is an integral part of our global strategy to achieve a future of zero emissions,” said Blissett. “We are confident that the established capability of our joint ventures together with the strong local supply base will further support the fast expansion of our NEV portfolios.”
For its global brands, GM has vowed to bring the heart of its future EV portfolios – the Ultium EV platform – to China through its SAIC-GM joint venture. The Cadillac LYRIQ, the first product from the Ultium platform, is scheduled to be launched in China in early 2022, to be followed by Buick and Chevrolet EVs.
