@FCA: Etobicoke Casting Plant Wins NADCA Safety Award

May 19, 2021 , Windsor, Ontario – Stellantis’ Etobicoke Casting Plant (ECP) has been recognized with an Outstanding award from the North American Die Casting Association (NADCA) based on its 2020 safety record.

The award recognizes the Toronto-based facility’s employee safety record during the 2020 calendar year, as documented by internal tracking data submitted to NADCA.

“Safety remains paramount to all of our operations here at Etobicoke Casting,” said Jeff Langlet, Plant Manager, Etobicoke Casting Plant. “This award from NADCA affirms to our plant family that their efforts, every day and on every shift, make a difference.”

Recent safety enhancements, which contributed to the NADCA award for ECP, include a redesign of specific tooling used for lifting in partnership with the supply vendor; enhanced fail-safe software for die casting machinery and the installation of forward and reverse cameras on an overhead carrier.

What’s more, operating safely during the COVID-19 pandemic posed a further set of safety challenges, such as required PPE, physical barriers, social distancing and more. These corporate protocols were quickly adopted at ECP and became everyday routine.

Founded in 1989, NADCA is headquartered in Arlington Heights, Illinois. NADCA says it “represents the voice of the die casting industry and is committed to promoting industry awareness, domestic growth in the global marketplace and member exposure.”

Members are located throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The annual NADCA Safety Award Program recognizes facilities across North America “with a strong focus on their employee’s safety and well being.” According to NADCA, “companies with DART (Days Away, Restricted or Transferred) records equal to or less than two (based on 2019’s All Manufacturing Industries’ average of two total recordable cases), are recognized with an ‘Outstanding’ award.”

As an award winner, ECP will be highlighted in the industry-focused Die Casting Engineer magazine and recognized at this year’s Die Casting Congress & Exposition, Oct. 4 – 6 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Etobicoke Casting previously won a NADCA award in 2014.

Etobicoke Casting Plant
Measuring 284,000 square feet, the Etobicoke Casting Plant produces aluminum components for a variety of Stellantis vehicles. The facility was built in 1942 and purchased by Chrysler Corporation in 1964. Today, it employees 224 people on three shifts. Etobicoke Casting was awarded Bronze status for its efforts in implementing World Class Manufacturing (WCM) in February of 2019. WCM is the structured and rigorous production system designed to make plants more flexible and competitive by eliminating waste and losses, improving safety and quality, and increasing productivity in a systematic and organized way. First implemented by Fiat in 2006, WCM principles are applied to all aspects of the plant organization, from quality to maintenance, operations to logistics, with the goal of continuous improvement. WCM also engages the workforce to provide and implement suggestions on how to improve their jobs and their plants, promoting a sense of ownership.
