SINGAPORE, 4 June 2021 – Grab will launch a new food delivery sector-focused training programme this July. Jointly developed by Grab, Asian Detours (AD), ComfortDelGro Driving Centre (CDC) and Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP), the programme takes into consideration the changing demands of the food delivery industry, and seeks to uplift the standards of service, food hygiene as well as enhance greater understanding of occupational safety for delivery-partners in Singapore.
“As the sector is fast growing, it is critical to equip delivery-partners with the skills to allow them to work safely, confidently and effectively in any environment. We believe this programme will help train our riders to have a stronger awareness of safety considerations, and will inculcate the best practices for ensuring road safety and food hygiene. As the demand for delivery services grows during this critical period where more consumers are staying at home, our pool of delivery-partners has likewise grown. Learnings from this training will ensure consistent and high quality service from all delivery partners,” said Xinwei Ngiam, Managing Director, Deliveries, Grab.
The two-full-day training programme will be conducted by trainers from AD, CDC and NP, and will utilise experiential and problem-based learning methods to help delivery-partners acquire and apply the knowledge effectively in their day-to-day work. The modules under this course will focus on two main areas:
- “Service and Food Hygiene for Delivery Personnel”, focusing on topics such as service mindset, communication skills, food hygiene and packing.
- “Occupational Safety for Delivery Personnel”, focusing on topics such as road regulations (complements the Mandatory Theory Test), sharing public pathways, accidents & case studies, practical tips on balancing with a delivery load, as well as riding techniques on braking, cornering and skid management. This module will be delivered based on partners’ mode of food delivery (i.e., cycling, walking, usage of motorbike, power-assisted bicycle, and personal mobility aid). For example, the modules for the “Occupational Safety for Delivery Personnel Course for Cyclists and Walkers” will be structured to be aligned with the requirements of the recently announced mandatory online theory test for PAB riders.
To raise the overall service standards of our food delivery service, new Grab delivery-partners would be required to complete the course within two months of their Grab account activation. Complementing our ongoing online safety and service courses, experienced Grab delivery-partners are also encouraged to sign up for this new programme.
Between 70% to 90% of training fees will be funded by SkillsFuture Singapore, and SkillsFuture credits may be used for the remaining fees. Additionally, Grab will be fully subsidising the remaining amount for all Grab delivery-partners.
Lim Tien Hock, Chief Executive Officer of ComfortDelGro Driving Centre said, “ComfortDelGro Driving Centre builds its entire business model on safe and responsible driving and riding. As one of Singapore’s leading riding schools, we are pleased to collaborate with Ngee Ann Polytechnic and Grab Singapore to provide this Defensive Riding course to the food delivery riders. We have tailored the training to help the riders hone their riding skills and improve the handling of road situations and we look forward to enhancing the safety of the riders, road users and the community.”
“Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s CET Academy is pleased to partner with Grab to provide food hygiene, service and occupational safety training for food delivery-partners, both within and outside of Grab. The two-day course has been specially curated to provide food delivery-partners with the knowledge and skills in customer engagement, food hygiene best practices, and occupational safety while on the road. With better training, the consistency of service standards in this rapidly growing sector will be improved and the safety consciousness of the delivery-partners will also be enhanced. We look forward to supporting this sector with training and development opportunities to continuously enhance service standards and career growth for its stakeholders,” said Christy Chung, Director of CET Academy, Ngee Ann Polytechnic.
