GM Canada Total Sales Grow 34 Per Cent in Q2 Despite Industry-Wide Inventory Challenges

2021-07-02

  • Sales of Chevrolet’s all-electric Bolt EV more than doubled, and deliveries began for the all-new Bolt EUV
  • Cadillac records best second quarter total sales ever
  • GM’s full-size truck franchise continues to grow, with GMC Sierra total sales up 26 per cent and Chevrolet Silverado up 29 per cent
  • Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac all posted quarter-over-quarter total sales increases

OSHAWA, Ont. (July 2, 2021) — Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac dealers delivered 66,911 vehicles in the second quarter of 2021, with Q2 total sales up 34 per cent year-over-year, despite supply constraints caused by the global semiconductor shortage.

“GM Canada second quarter sales exceeded expectations thanks to continued strong customer demand for our portfolio of EVs, utility vehicles, and pickups,” said Sandor Piszar, vice president, sales, service and marketing, GM Canada. “Our team delivered outstanding results despite industry-wide inventory challenges. We’re building every vehicle we can, and our dealers are selling virtually every vehicle they receive – often the minute they hit the lot.”

Chevrolet delivered a total of 1,636 Bolt EVs, more than double the sales of a year ago. In addition, the first of the all-new Bolt EUVs have started to arrive in Canada. Chevrolet expects EV sales will continue to grow as the brand makes EV ownership easier for Canadians by covering the cost of the standard installation of a Level 2 (240-volt) charging home outlet for eligible customers who purchase or lease a new 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV or Bolt EV with Charged by Chevrolet.*

Demand for full-size trucks continues to grow as the country begins to recover from the pandemic. Sales of the Chevrolet Silverado climbed 29 per cent, while sales of the GMC Sierra climbed 26 per cent.

To support strong customer demand for GM’s new family of pickup trucks, GM is accelerating the start of production of full-size trucks at Oshawa Assembly to the fourth quarter of this year ahead of the previous target of January 2022. Oshawa Assembly is on track to deliver one of the fastest plant launches in GM history.

Additional highlights from 2021 Q2 sales include:

  • Chevrolet’s total sales increased 32 per cent year-over-year, bolstered by the Trailblazer’s record-breaking 2,617 units sold
  • Cadillac total sales climbed 81 per cent, for the best Q2 sales in the brand’s history, with the XT5 delivering 1,703 units
  • GMC total sales are up 32 per cent, with Yukon sales up 212 per cent
  • Buick’s total sales increased 22 per cent, with strong deliveries for both the Envision and Enclave
