- New Super Cruise capabilities include hands-free automatic lane change and trailering for compatible trucks and SUVs
- Company will offer over-the-air updates for select model year 2021 Super Cruise-equipped models
OSHAWA, Ont. (Wednesday, July 28, 2021) – General Motors announced today it will introduce new Super Cruise[1] capabilities on five model year 2022 vehicles in the first quarter of 2022. Super Cruise is the industry’s first true hands-free driver-assistance technology allowing drivers to travel hands-free on divided and compatible highways across Canada and the U.S.
New capabilities include:
- Trailering – Customers will be able to trailer their boat, camper and more while driving hands-free.[2]
- Automatic lane change – The technology can indicate when a lane change is optimal and initiate the maneuver, while following signaling protocols.[3]
- Enhanced navigation display – Super Cruise compatible divided highways will be displayed in the in-vehicle navigation systems for vehicles equipped with the embedded Google Maps app, which will show routes available for hands-free driving, during route selection
These enhancements will be available on select model year 2022 Super Cruise enabled vehicles, including Cadillac Escalade[4], Cadillac CT4[5], Cadillac CT5[6], Chevrolet Silverado[7], and GMC Sierra[8].
“We’re excited to expand Super Cruise to even more new models with additional capabilities to provide our customers with even more opportunities to go hands-free,” said Mario Maiorana, Super Cruise chief engineer. “The additional Super Cruise-enabled vehicles and new features are an important step toward our goal of enabling more hands-free driving and getting people more comfortable with letting go of the wheel.”
GM’s vehicle intelligence platform, which provides bandwidth and data processing power, enabled these enhancements and underscores GM’s software expertise. The digital platform also enables GM to provide over-the-air updates to select model year 2021 vehicle owners, allowing them to take advantage of Super Cruise’s latest enhancements.
Super Cruise is planned to be available on 22 vehicles by 2023, including GMC HUMMER EV Pickup[9],Cadillac LYRIQ[10] and GMC HUMMER EV SUV[11]. Additional vehicles that offer versions of Super Cruise include the 2022 Cadillac XT6[12] and the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV[13].
GM launched Super Cruise in 2017 with the Cadillac brand and has added capabilities, expanded Super Cruise-enabled routes and availability on more products since then.
Engineers at GM’s Canadian Technical Centre (CTC) were key members of the team who originally worked on the development of Super Cruise technology. Since that time, this technology has evolved with software enhancements – with collaboration and expertise from GM’s Canadian engineers.
