@GM: GM Canada Sales Down 23 Per Cent Due to Ongoing Semiconductor Shortage

GM Canada Sales Down 23 Per Cent Due to Ongoing Semiconductor Shortage

2021-10-01

OSHAWA, Ont. (October 1, 2021) — Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac dealers delivered 48,657 vehicles in the third quarter, down 23 per cent from a year ago, as industry-wide supply chain disruptions limited dealer inventories.

“These results reflect how the shortage of semiconductors continues to impact vehicle production and dealer inventory,” said Sandor Piszar, vice president, sales, service and marketing, GM Canada.  “However, the bright spots for the quarter illustrate how GM is prioritizing production of our most in-demand models and how our dealers continue to meet customer demand for these vehicles despite the challenges.”

For example, GM’s newest utility vehicles recorded sales increases in Canada for the third quarter:

  • The compact Chevrolet Trailblazer saw total sales more than double, up 120 per cent
  • The mid-size Buick Envision saw total deliveries more than double, up 114 per cent
  • The full-sized SUVs all posted significant gains:
    • Chevrolet Tahoe up 71 per cent, Suburban up 232 per cent
    • Cadillac Escalade up 113 per cent, Escalade ESV up 61 per cent
    • GMC Yukon up 67 per cent, Yukon XL up 157 per cent

Looking to the fourth quarter, GM expects a steady flow of vehicles held at plants will continue to be released to dealers, production restarting at key crossover and car plants, and looks forward to a more stable operating environment through the fall. Pickup production is on track to begin later this year at Oshawa Assembly, marking one of the fastest plant launches in GM’s history.
