WASHINGTON, DC. (November 18, 2021) – Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) has filed a defect notification with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for a safety defect, which exists in certain 2018-2019 CX-5, CX-9, and MX-5 Vehicles as well as 2018 Mazda6, and 2019 CX-3 vehicles built at both Mazda Motor Corporation and Mazda de Mexico Vehicle Operation. NOTE: 2019-2020 Mazda2 and 2018 Mazda3 vehicles are also impacted but they are in Territory markets. The total affected subject vehicles is 121,038 in the US and US Territories.
The impeller in some low-pressure fuel pumps may become deformed under certain conditions, which could cause fuel pump failure. Fuel pump failure may result in engine no start and/or vehicle stall while driving at low speed and, in rare instances, a vehicle stall could occur while driving at higher speeds, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, drivers may notice this defect by a check engine light, and/or rough engine operation.
There have been no reports of any accidents or vehicle fire due to the defect.

MY2018 MX-5 – 391 units
MY2019 MX-5 -2,517 units
Affected Vehicles built at Mazda De Mexico Vehicle Operation:
MY2019 Mazda3 – 186 units
MY2020 Mazda2 – 43 units
