– Welcome back to “Yahoo Finance Live.” We are getting new updates in terms of what some big EV players are planning with a traditional model. That would be the new Silverado. And want to get to Yahoo Finance’s Pras Subramanian for details on what Chevy’s big new EV push is going to look like. Pras?
PRAS SUBRAMANIAN: Yeah, Zack. CEO Mary Barra just wrapped up her CES keynote just now where she unveiled the new Silverado EV, as they’re calling it. I just want to run through some of the details here. It’s going to launch in 2023 with two models– a loaded RST first edition and then a fleet oriented WT or Work Truck model.
Both of these are fully electric trucks designed from the ground up, GM says, powered by the Ultium battery platform, dual motors front and rear to power this all-wheel drive system. Estimated 400 mile range or so on a full charge for both the work truck and the RST. Around 660 horsepower– so very good power numbers here. And also has the off board power mode able to charge a worksite or a campsite, things like that.
I also want to note that, you know, a lot of these EV trucks have a party trick, I’m calling it. Innovation that sort of makes them stick out. In this case, you know, the– the– the EV– so far, the EV has a multi flex midgate that allows it to kind of close the– the back of the cab and fold down.
So you can actually extend the cab of the truck. You can actually extend it by nine feet with the tailgate closed and 11 feet with the tailgate open. So that’s a pretty fun little trick that can allow you to store a weird or longer object type of payload type items.
Now, timing and pricing– the Silverado EV will debut in the Spring of 2023 with the work truck model with 400 miles of range. No pricing was given here, not much in terms of specifications. In the Fall of 2023, the fully loaded– all the bells and whistles– RST version, first model edition, comes out with that 400 mile range, but also an MSRP of $105,000 that you read. You know, that’s a lot of money butting up against that Hummer EV– Uber EV truck– that GM already– already has.
GM says that once production ramps up, we’ll offer a cheaper work truck model around $39,000– again, specs not given– and probably later in 2023 or even 2024. And then eventually over time, they’ll pull out a $50,000, $60,000, $70,000, $80,000 trims that’ll come out as– for more flexibility and choice for customers as time goes on. And one [INAUDIBLE], you can actually reserve your [INAUDIBLE] EV on the website. So go to the website right now.
– Yeah, fascinating to see all these promises being delivered. And of course, as we know, having to deliver on those quite literally is going to be the next thing to watch here as all these traditional automakers really make their EV pushes in 2022. Pras Subramanian bringing us the latest there on that front. Appreciate it.
