Buick Launches OTA Updates for Enhanced Driver Assistance System
2022-01-17
SHANGHAI — Enhanced driver assistance technology, including the first-ever instructed lane changing feature and optimized Lane Centering Control and Traffic Jam Assistance, will be available on the Buick GL8 Avenir and ES variants in China via over-the-air (OTA) updates beginning today.
With the first OTA updates for intelligent driving technology, the Buick eCruise Pro intelligent driver assist system will elevate the driving experience by offering smarter, safer and more adaptive mobility tailored for various road conditions and users’ driving preferences in China.
“We are excited to expand our eCruise technology with more capability, allowing our customers to enjoy more effortless and safer travelling,” said Cesar Toledo, general director of Buick Sales and Marketing at SAIC-GM. “The tailored solution for China represents our strong local capability and ongoing exploration to move toward a future that is more connected and intelligent.”
The Buick eCruise Pro system builds on the combination of high-tech sensors and cameras, together with enhanced data processing power. The system’s high-resolution wide-angle camera in front utilizes a Mobileye EyeQ4® chip. At 2.5 trillion operations per second, it has 10 times the processing power of its predecessor, ensuring precise information about other vehicles, pedestrians, two-wheelers and lane markers.
Featuring five millimeter-wave radars around the vehicle, together with 12 ultrasonic sensors and four high-resolution 360-degree cameras, the Buick eCruise Pro system enables high-accuracy measurements for distance and speed, which are not affected by external factors such as dust, fog, rain, snow or extreme weather conditions. Along with a highly integrated inertial navigation system and a powerful central processing unit, it also supports better vehicle control for handling and riding.
The OTA notice will be automatically pushed to applicable GL8 MPVs. With a simple click, it will take about 5 minutes for customers to complete the update.
When the Lane Centering Control system is activated and the vehicle speed is over 40 km/h, the all-new Instructed Lane Changing function can help change the lane automatically if the steering toggle is toggled. When the lane changing can’t be executed in certain instances, gauge cluster signals and messages will inform the driver why.
Leveraging integrated software and hardware, the steering wheel hands-off detection (HOD) feature was also enhanced to support Lane Centering Control and Traffic Jam Assistance functionality, alleviating driving fatigue at high speeds and on congested roads while ensuring a higher level of safety.
The Buick eCruise Pro system has been tested and certified on multiple road conditions in China, including more than 200,000 km of city streets, elevated roads, highways and expressways.
With the latest OTA updates on the intelligent driving system, the Buick eCruise Pro system provides over 20 intelligent driving and active safety features. Since 2020, Buick has conducted multiple OTA updates annually in China for its eConnect connectivity system.
