Tesla is having AI Day #2 in a few months.
CEO Elon Musk announced that Tesla would hold a second AI Day on August 19 later this year. He also said that there were so many cool updates regarding Tesla AI, and when asked by Dave Lee about showing a sneak preview of the Tesla Bot, Elon said yes, they would. Tesla was generous enough to include me on the invite list last year, and I’m hoping for another invite again this year so that I can report from the ground what the atmosphere and discussions are like there.
There’s another purpose for AI Day, and Elon elaborated on that as well. He said that the purpose of AI Day is to convince great AI/software/chip talent to join Tesla.

During Tesla’s Q1 2022 earnings call, Elon Musk spoke of how the Optimus bot would be worth more than Tesla’s car business and Full-Self Driving.
“The importance of Optimus will become apparent in the coming years. Those who are insightful or listen carefully will understand that Optimus ultimately will be worth more than the car business, worth more than FSD. That’s my firm belief.”

Tesla unveiled plans for the humanoid robot during the first AI Day, with someone dressed as the robot with an adorable dance show as a humorous way to introduce it. I suspect it might have been one of Elon’s kids playing the part. It looks like Tesla AI Day #2 may show us an actual prototype. Elon Musk has also said that the production of the first version could start in 2023.
One of the key takeaways I found from being at AI Day last year was that Tesla’s identity is continuing to evolve as it continues to accelerate the transition to sustainability. Although this may seem minor to those invested in Tesla, keep in mind that I knew nothing about artificial intelligence and was probably the most uneducated person about the topic at the presentation. When I was at AI Day last year, there were several technology experts on topics such as machine learning, computers, software, and more. Also, the fact that what was once just a carmaker unveiled the Dojo supercomputer should blow your mind.
I think Tesla’s evolution is the key to its success. Many companies and people alike would be satisfied with profitability at the level Tesla is at. However, Tesla continues to push toward its goals and embrace the challenges that are along the journey. And now Tesla, which was once just an automaker, is a leader in AI technology.
For Tesla to help solve advanced problems that plague our society (like climate change), it needs to take on these challenges with advanced technology. It’s more than just electric cars that are pretty and fast. Tesla is heavily focused on increasing vehicle safety, and this requires AI, especially if one wants to reduce the number of accidents and casualties caused by accidents on the roads.
Whether or not I get to see this one in person, I’m looking forward to the updates.
