ACI: May in red for second-hand cars and motorcycles, radiation continues to drop sharply

07.06.2022

Closing in negative also in May for the second-hand market. The changes in ownership of the four wheels net of mini-revolutions (temporary transfers in the name of the concessionaire pending resale to the end customer) have filed a decline of 7.2% compared to May 2021, which rises to 11.4% for the presence in May 2022 of an extra working day. For every 100 new cars, 193 second-hand cars were sold in May (206 in the first five months of the year).

Yet another confirmation on the second-hand market of the dominance of traditional diesel and gasoline fuel systems, even if the month of May highlights a significant growth in gasoline hybrid cars, which have reached a market share of 3.4%, compared to 1.9% recorded in the same month last year. Diesel fuel systems are still on the top of the shields in mini-passes, despite the drop in their market share from 57.2% in May 2021 to 53.7% in May 2022. The incidence of petrol-driven hybrids, in the case of mini-passes, is instead this month around 3.7%.

The balance sheet was in the red in May also for the transfer of ownership of motorcycles, which again net of mini-revolutions recorded a negative monthly variation of 5% compared to May 2021, which rises to 9.3% in terms of the daily average for effect of the aforementioned extra working day.

Overall, in the first five months of 2022 compared to the same period of 2021, net transfers of ownership recorded decreases of 9.3% for cars, 6.9% for motorcycles and 8.2% for all vehicles.

The data are reported in the latest monthly bulletin “Auto-Trend”, the statistical analysis carried out by the Automobile Club of Italy on the PRA data, available on the website www.aci.it.

Another strong setback in May due to radiation, which in the four-wheel sector budgeted a decrease of 30.5% compared to the same month of 2021 (-33.7% in terms of daily average ), with the presentation of 89,733 cases (to identify a lower level in the last 20 years, it is necessary to return to May 2020, in full Covid-19 emergency). This latest collapse in radiation weighs in particular on the sharp monthly decrease of 36.5% in demolitions. The unit replacement rate was 0.72 in May (72 of every 100 new cars were canceled) and 0.83 in the first five months of 2022.

In the month of May, the radiation from motorcycles also suffered a sharp slowdown, accounting for a monthly decrease of 9.7% (-13.8% in terms of daily average).

Overall, in the period January-May 2022 compared to the same months of 2021, the radiations filed decreases of 32% for cars, 4.3% for motorcycles and 29.5% for all vehicles.
