PROTON CSR INITIATIVE SUPPORTS SCHOOLS IN TANJUNG MALIM
– SMK Proton City and SK Proton City receive equipment and cash contributions for sports
Tanjung Malim, 27 June 2022 – National car maker PROTON and Kelab Proton, its sports and recreation arm for staff, contributed equipment and cash to two schools in Proton City to promote sports amongst students. The two schools, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Proton City and Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Proton City, received sports equipment and cash contributions respectively during their annual sports day recently.
“Tanjung Malim has been home to PROTON since 2003, when we started manufacturing operations at a brand-new plant. Over the years our presence has grown and today, nearly 3,000 workers are stationed here with more to come. These workers are an integral part of the local community and over 1,000 of their children are students at these schools, so the company is proud to collaborate with them to educate the next generation of Proton-ians from this historic town,” said Roslan Abdullah, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of PROTON.
PROTON’s decision to support schools via sports is in response to the Ministry of Education’s (MOE) call for companies to get involved in the 1 Student 1 Sport policy, which aims to produce students balanced in all the various aspects of life including physical, emotional, spiritual, and intellectual disciplines. The sponsorship of sports equipment to SMK Proton City mirrors this ethos and is in collaboration with the Parents-Teachers Association and Kelab PROTON Tanjung Malim.
“PROTON’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme is guided by four core pillars, Workplace, Environment, Marketplace, and Education. Additionally, the support of children is in line with our corporate values of Teamwork, Achiever, Respect, and Integrity (TARI), which is why we want to collaborate with the schools to improve the quality and involvement of students via sports activities.
“PROTON’s involvement in the local community has also aided in the development of the surrounding area. The building of roads and facilities as well as the added presence of international brands to cater to the needs of PROTON and its workforce has delivered an economic boost, which in turn has helped to spur growth in areas such as the construction of new homes,” added Roslan Abdullah.
Regarding the contributions made, Ferdaus bin Mohni, Chairman of the Parents-Teachers Association for SMK Proton City said, “We are grateful to have PROTON on board for this community program. Schools in Proton City have seen an increase in enrolment by children of PROTON staff and with more set to come, we look forward to building the relationship with the national automotive brand.”
