Auto: black June for the second-hand market

08.07.2022

Negative first six months of 2022 for second-hand vehicles. Radiation from the PRA also decreases, compromising the turnover of the fleet in circulation

The used car market is in crisis: the 221,457 changes of ownership recorded by the Public Automobile Register in June decreased by 17.9% compared to the same month last year. For every 100 new cars, 173 used cars were sold in June and 200 in the first half of the year.

Petrol and diesel are still protagonists in the transfer of ownership, as hybrids do not exceed 3.5% of total sales. Motorcycles are also in the red, down by 7.5% with just 69,202 transfers of ownership.

As stated in the latest “Auto-Trend” bulletin, published on the Automobile Club d’Italia website, the first half of 2022 closes with all negative indicators for used vehicles: -10.8% cars, -7% motorcycles and -9.2% for the total number of vehicles compared to last year.

The statistics also show the trend of radiation from the PRA, essential for understanding the evolution of the fleet: in June, car radiations decreased by 21.5%, stopping at 98,694 units (negative peak in June over the last 20 years). For every 100 new cars, 77 were canceled in June and 81 in the first half of the year.

Things are better for two-wheelers, whose 12,014 cancellations from the PRA in June are up 9.4% compared to the same month in 2021. Since the beginning of the year, radiation has fallen by 30% for cars, by just 1.8 % for motorcycles and 27.9% for vehicles in general.
