For Q2 F2019, the Indian auto industry (excluding two wheelers) posted a moderate growth of 4.8%. This moderation in growth was due to a high base from Q2 F2018, shift of the festive season to Q3 F2019 and partial slowing down of demand for passenger vehicles especially in urban parts of the country. The passenger vehicle industry reported a de-growth of 3.6%, with the utility vehicle de-growing 8.1%. The commercial vehicle goods industry posted a robust growth of 29.8%, with LCV < 3.5T goods segment growing 31.3% and the MHCV goods segment grew 29.5%. The demand in the LCV < 3.5T segment was driven by a strong rural demand coming from the agri sector and sustained efforts for rural development coupled with affordable finance. The MHCV segment growth is driven by sustained investment in road, infra projects and an uptick in IIP. In Q2 F2019, the total domestic automotive volume for the Company grew by 8.8% and the HCV volume with sales of 3078 trucks grew by 48.1%. The Company exported 9,244 vehicles during the current quarter, a growth of 18.9% over the corresponding quarter previous year.

The domestic tractor industry witnessed a decline of 2.6% in Q2 F2019 on account of shift in festive season to Q3 F2019 which resulted in the company’s domestic tractor sales also declining by 5.2% in Q2 F2019. With the healthy reservoir levels, progress on rabi sowing and increase in minimum support prices of Rabi crops we expect the growth momentum to pick up in the coming months.

Outlook:

Real GDP growth, according to the RBI's estimates, is projected to improve from 6.7 per cent in 2017-18 to 7.4 per cent in 2018-19. Rising gross fixed capital formation, driven by the government’s focus on the road sector and affordable housing along with higher private spending has helped buoy growth so far. The monsoon was marked by an overall deficit of 9 per cent but distribution of precipitation remained conducive along with higher water reservoir levels. Therefore, the first advance estimates of production of kharif crops for 2018-19 have placed food grains production being 0.6 per cent higher than last year’s level.

Going forward, growth will be a function of evolving liquidity conditions as well as private and government spending. Among global factors, crude oil price behaviour and US-China trade policy maneuvering will be the key factors to watch out for.

Mahindra and Ford Sign Agreements on Powertrain Sharing and Connected Car Solutions

Mahindra and Ford Sign Agreements on Powertrain Sharing and Connected Car Solutions

Agreements strengthen the ongoing strategic collaboration between two of the world’s leading automotive brands
Mahindra to supply Bharat Stage VI (BS-VI) compliant gasoline engines to help Ford strengthen its petrol portfolio in current and future product programs for India
Mahindra and Ford to jointly develop connected vehicle solutions to be deployed across Mahindra and Ford products

New Delhi, India, October 17, 2018 – Mahindra Group and Ford today strengthened their ongoing strategic alliance in India with the signing of two definitive agreements.

The two definitive agreements on powertrain sharing and connected car solutions reinforce the progress made in the strategic alliance between the two companies, first announced in September 2017 and followed up with five Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) in March 2018.

Under the definitive agreement on powertrain sharing, Mahindra Group will develop and supply a low-displacement petrol engine to Ford India for use in its present and future vehicles, starting in 2020. The BS-VI compliant powertrain will help Ford extend and strengthen its existing offering of petrol engines, that currently includes the all-new 3-cylinder TiVCT family.

Building on their intent to co-develop a suite of connected car solutions, Mahindra and Ford also announced joint development of a telematics control unit. Once developed, the connected vehicle solution will be deployed across both Mahindra and Ford vehicles.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Pawan Goenka, Managing Director, Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd. said, “Today’s announcement further builds on commitments made so far, leading to a fruition of exciting new opportunities. We are confident to meet customer expectations by working together on a number of joint development areas. Going forward we will continue to identify the synergies that exist between the two companies.”

“We are pleased with the progress our teams have made since we announced our strategic alliance with Mahindra Group a year ago,” said Jim Farley, Ford executive vice president and president of Global Markets. “Today we go further in delivering even greater value. With our collaboration in powertrain and connected car solutions, we will deliver an affordable portfolio and enable our Indian consumers to get behind the wheel, feeling more confident and connected.”

Both companies continue to make progress on the remaining MoUs signed earlier this year. This includes leveraging their respective strengths on product development for India and emerging markets, including co-development of compact SUVs and electric vehicles.

Aiming to generate synergies and improve efficiencies, the strategic alliance between the two companies focuses on leveraging the benefits of Ford’s global reach and expertise and Mahindra’s scale in India and its successful operating model.

Mahindra has led the utility vehicles segment in India for the past seven decades. The spirit of ingenuity has driven Mahindra to be amongst the few global companies pioneering the development of clean and affordable technology and is the only player with a portfolio of electric vehicles commercially available in India. Expanding its global presence, Mahindra owns a majority stake in Ssangyong Motor Company in Korea, and it has entered into the shared mobility space with investments in ridesharing platforms in the U.S. and is developing products like the GenZe – the world’s first electric connected scooter.

Ford was among the first global automakers to enter India in 1995. Now one of the largest exporters of cars from the country, Ford manufactures and exports vehicles and engines from its manufacturing facilities in Chennai, Tamil Nadu and Sanand, Gujarat. India is also the second-largest Ford employee base globally, with more than 14,000 people working across the Ford India or Global Business Services operations in New Delhi, Chennai and Coimbatore.

Mahindra Group To Go Carbon Neutral by 2040 Focus on Energy Efficiency and Renewable Power

Mahindra Group To Go Carbon Neutral by 2040 Focus on Energy Efficiency and Renewable Power

California Sept 14, 2018: Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), India’s leading manufacturer of utility vehicles and part of the USD 20.7 billion Mahindra Group, today announced its commitment to become a carbon neutral company by 2040. Mahindra will focus on energy efficiency and the use of renewable power to achieve this target. Residual emissions will be addressed through carbon sinks.

Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group and co-chair of the Global Climate Action Summit currently under way in San Francisco committed that his entire group of businesses would become carbon neutral.

This is significant because earlier Mr Mahindra had pledged that only its flagship company – Mahindra & Mahindra – would become carbon neutral by 2040. However, after listening to leaders speak at the Summit, he upped the ante on his commitment by extending that pledge to the entire group.

“We are doing our part in the global fight against climate change with this ambitious new target. Mahindra will leverage the latest technological advances and its recently announced Carbon Price to work towards being carbon neutral by 2040.”

M&M was the first company in the world to commit to doubling energy productivity by signing on to The Climate Group’s program EP100. Using energy efficient lighting, efficient heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), motors and heat recovery projects, Mahindra & Mahindra has doubled the energy productivity of the automotive business almost 12 years ahead of schedule. The farm equipment business is also ahead of schedule in achieving its goal and is more than half-way there.

The company was also the first Indian company to announce its internal Carbon Price of $10 per ton of carbon emitted to fund investments required to pursue the path of carbon neutrality. The price was carefully arrived at on the basis of international benchmarks and an assessment of what was required to achieve the goals set by the business on energy efficiency and renewable energy.

The company has more than 10 years of experience in creating carbon sinks. It looks forward to using this experience to deal with residual emissions in a manner that is world class and follows the best established protocols.

M&M will be working on its carbon neutrality commitment with the international non-profit organization Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), which works with leading companies to raise the bar for corporate sustainability leadership. It will continue to work with EDF and other leading partners as it implements actions towards achieving carbon neutrality.

M&M is also a signatory of the Science based targets initiative which provides companies with a clear pathway for reducing emissions in line with the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels. All these commitments are helping the company on its path to go carbon neutral.

Mumbai, 12th Sept: As the world looks to heavy industry to help drive emissions cuts, Mahindra Vehicle Manufacturers Ltd, Mahindra Heavy Engines Ltd have, today, pledged to put energy efficiency at the heart of their business growth strategies by joining EP100.

EP100 is a global collaborative initiative on energy productivity led by The Climate Group in partnership with the Alliance to Save Energy. By setting ambitious targets and integrating energy efficiency into business strategy, EP100 members are driving clean tech innovation while delivering on emissions reduction goals. Today’s announcement comes just ahead of the Global Climate Action Summit (September 12-14), where Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group, will address leaders from business, states, regions and cities who will come together in San Francisco to “Take Ambition to the Next Level”.

Helen Clarkson, CEO, The Climate Group, said, “I am excited to see such a significant group of large energy users’ step up their efforts on energy efficiency. Lowering energy use in sectors like auto-manufacturing is an ambitious task, but the figures speak for themselves – making smarter use of energy boosts the bottom line and drives down greenhouse gas emissions. These announcements will inspire many more to come on board, accelerating a clean economy.”

Mahindra Vehicle Manufacturers Ltd has committed to doubling its energy productivity by 2041 (2016 baseline); Mahindra Heavy Engines Ltd by 2041 (2016 baseline). Mahindra & Mahindra and Mahindra Holidays & Resorts India Ltd. are already members of EP100, having joined in 2016. Speaking about this commitment, Vijay Kalra, Chief of Manufacturing Operations – M&M, Auto Division said, “Operating in a country like India which is energy deficient, energy security and energy cost is of vital importance for sustainable business performance. By joining the EP100 program, we demonstrate our commitment to our employees, society and the nation at large. As we take aspirational targets to enhance energy productivity there will be innovation and development of new technologies that will change the way we live and work. It’s all about arriving at a win-win situation for all. Be it business, employees and society.”

In addition to this, Mahindra Electric, a Mahindra Group company, has signed EV100, a global initiative bringing together forward looking companies committed to accelerating the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) and making electric transport the new normal by 2030. Another Group company, Mahindra Holidays & Resorts India Ltd. has committed to RE 100, setting a 100% renewable electricity target for its entire global operations by 2050.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Aug. 3, 2018 – “We understand that a complaint has been filed by FCA with the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) against Mahindra. Mahindra has not yet been served with the complaint and we prefer not to comment at length on the dispute at this time. However, we have reviewed FCA’s core filing and find it to be without merit. Mahindra has a historic relationship and agreements with FCA and its predecessors that go back seventy years.

The relationship began in the 1940’s with the original agreement with Willys and continues to this day, with the most recent agreement executed with FCA (then Chrysler Group LLC) in 2009. Our actions, products, and product distribution (including ROXOR) both honor the legacy of the relationship and the terms of our agreements with FCA. Mahindra has been co-existing with FCA (and the Jeep brand) for over 25 years in India and in many other countries.

The ROXOR is a derivative of Mahindra vehicles distributed in those markets. Based on these agreements and our history, we believe that FCA’s claims are baseless and Mahindra is well within its rights to both manufacture and distribute the ROXOR off-road vehicle.”
