Fisker teases solar roof for upcoming electric SUV

Road/Show by CNET article by ANDREW KROK

The Fisker Karma had a solar panel in the roof, too, so this shouldn't come as a surprise.

I have to imagine those lines on the roof are just stylistic renderings.

Henrik Fisker, and the automotive manufacturer that bore his name, was one of the first to implement solar panels across the length of a car's roof. While the Fisker Karma might be dead, gone and subsequently revived under a new name now, Fisker himself has started a new venture and, what do you know, this new car will have a solar roof, too.

Henrik Fisker took to social media on Wednesday to promote a new teaser for his company's upcoming electric SUV. This new teaser shows a little bit more of the crossover's back end, but more importantly, it shows that this new car will have a solar roof running the length of the vehicle. The car appears to also have a sunroof, so it's unclear how that will all be implemented together, but until the car shows up in the real world, we'll have to take Fisker's word for it.

Last week, we got a different view of the Fisker SUV's tuchus. Fisker tweeted out an image of the car's roof and D-pillar, with a clever integrated turn signal mounted high above the taillight. Fisker says it will improve safety, but it's unclear what benefits are offered by changing the turn signal's location. Previous teasers have shown off the front end from various angles, and it's a beefy looking thing, that's for sure.

Fisker has promised that a drivable prototype will be ready by the end of the year. So far, all we know is that the company aims to have a range in excess of 300 miles, yet its starting price will stay under the $40,000 mark. Sales are expected to take place in the second half of 2021, so there's likely some time before we see the actual production version of this still-unnamed utility vehicle.

Fisker teases electric crossover again and a high-vis turn signal

Elon Musk turns to Twitter when it's time to spread the Tesla news. Henrik Fisker perfers Facebook. The Danish-American designer took to FB once more to tease his coming electric crossover, this time showing a slice of the rear three-quarter. The feature he wants to highlight is the turn signal set into the D-pillar, which “will provide extra safety when you change lanes.”
There are a fair few other details to glean as well. Starting from the top, a sunroof opening appears mounted quite a bit rearward. The aperture appears small in view of Fisker promising us that pressing a button will open the roof to create “an extended open-air atmosphere;” so we expect there's another opening over the front seats. The belt line catches the eye; we'll see what it does for rear three-quarter visibility from the driver's seat. The pop-out door handles look to be illuminated by thin LED strips, and more such strips look to define the CHMSL on the tailgate spoiler and taillights. And note the curve of that seriously punched-out rear fender, designed to fit the optional 22-inch wheel.

Fisker says the full-on reveal comes this December. From that point, it'll be around an 18-month wait for the production version, planned for the latter half of 2021. Many headlining features have been promised, from the “vastly spacious” and “innovative interior with new utility features,” the “captivating design touches that have been traditionally reserved for supercars,” and an as-yet-unidentified “new radical feature.”
Beyond the teasers, what we're expecting is a 300-mile range from a lithium-ion battery pack of at least 80 kWh, a single electric motor standard, two when optioned with all-wheel drive, and a price of under $40,000 to start.
The electric mover will be one of three affordable EVs coming from Fisker gathered under the $129,000 EMotion flagship electric sedan. Expect more teasers before December.

Fisker Drops New Teasers Of Its Electric SUV

Motor1 article by ANTHONY KARR, Editor
The model will feature a full-length solar roof.

The teasing game for Fisker’s production, all-electric SUV continues with two new teaser images. Through the voice of its ideologist and CEO, Henrik Fisker, the company reaffirms the vehicle will make its public debut in December this year.

One of the very important features the SUV will have is the full-length solar roof which can be seen in one of the new teaser images (see the lead image of this article). The rendering also hints the raised zero-emissions machine will have prominent fenders that, according to Henrik Fisker, belong to a supercar.

“Fisker was the first in the world to introduce a full-length #Solar roof: we will do it again on our SUV,” Fisker says in his latest Facebook post.

It will be interesting to see whether this will be an openable roof panel as in a previous post, Fisker hinted the vehicle will have an “extended open-air atmosphere” available at the touch of a button.

In older posts, Fisker also revealed the starting price of the yet unnamed model will be below $40,000 with sales starting around 2021. The company will follow the same selling strategy model as Tesla – setting up stores to sell the cars directly to the customers instead of going through dealerships.

“The world’s most sustainable vehicle! The Fisker all-electric SUV will feature new recycled materials from ocean debris and other recycled materials! It’s not just another EV. We want to change the world! Let’s do it.”

Some of the previously released teaser images revealed the SUV will feature turn signals mounted on the D-pillars, as well as pop-out door handles surrounded by an illuminated strip. According to preliminary details, the maximum range between two charges will be approximately 300 miles (483 kilometers) thanks to an 80-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Two electric motors will motivate the SUV providing an all-wheel-drive setup.

Fisker unveils plans for $40,000 electric SUV to compete with Tesla Model Y

Mashable Article by SASHA LEKACH

Several years ago, Fisker was considered a viable Tesla competitor — but after problems with its Karma electric luxury sedan, it slipped out of the limelight.

But on Monday, the company from iconic car designer Henrik Fisker, announced it was ready to take on Tesla again. It unveiled an unnamed electric SUV priced at $40,000. It's supposed to be the first of three “affordable” electric vehicles coming from the car maker.

Although details are scarce this early in the process, Fisker made the announcement just days after Tesla unveiled its Model Y compact SUV. The pricing for Tesla's newest car? It starts at $39,000.

Fisker plans for the car to officially launch in 2021 and is targeting — just like the Model Y — a 300-mile range on a single charge. A four-wheel drive version with two electric motors will be available, like Tesla's dual motor version of the Model 3.

More details like the name, final look of the SUV, and exact pricing will come by the end of this year. Reservations for the car will be available closer to the production date.

Also like Tesla, Fisker is figuring out manufacturing plans, but will select a facility within the U.S. The Model 3 is made at Tesla's Fremont factory, while the Model Y may be assembled in the Nevada Gigafactory.

Fisker's EMotion luxury sedan — considered a Model S competitor — is the company's “flagship” car, and is expected to go 500 miles on a single charge. It'll be the first car to feature the company's solid-state batteries instead of typical lithium-ion batteries. Fisker anticipates charging times dropping to just minutes.

The EMotion was first shown at CES last year, but the release date of the car with its signature butterfly doors (take that falcon wings!) is still unclear. The priority is to get the more affordable EVs made and available first.

Fisker also plans to release its Orbit driverless shuttle later this year.

Solid-State Battery Breakthrough: Fisker Inc.’s Scientists File Patents on Superior Energy Density Tech, Shattering Conventional Thoughts on EV Range and Charge Times

Fisker’s scientists, including the co-founder of global battery tech pioneer Sakti3, filed patents this week on flexible, superior energy density solid-state batteries.
Breakthrough technology will enable dramatically longer ranges of more than 500 miles on a single charge and charging times as low as one minute – faster than filling up a gas tank.
Automotive applications anticipated to be production grade ready from 2023 onwards. • Fisker’s solid-state batteries will feature three-dimensional electrodes with 2.5 times the energy density of lithium-ion batteries.

LOS ANGELES (November 13, 2017) – Fisker Inc., designer and manufacturer of uniquely stunning electric vehicles complemented with some of the longest EV ranges on earth, has filed patents this week – under a non-publication request – on flexible solid-state battery technology to challenge conventional thought on vehicle battery energy density, range, charging times and manufacturing costs.

Fisker’s scientists have reached an early breakthrough in solid-state technology. The wider team includes the co-founder of solid-state battery technology pioneer, Sakti3 – a first inventor of the seminal patents. Implications for Fisker’s vehicles beyond 2023 – as well as the larger EV industry as a whole – are significant. The patent includes claims over novel materials and manufacturing processes that are critical in achieving the required energy density, power and cost targets that are paramount for the widespread use of electric vehicles.

REVOLUTIONARY SCIENCE. MULTIPLE INDUSTRY FIRSTS

Current limitations in solid-state technology include low electrode current density, limited temperature ranges, limited materials availability, high costs and non-scalable manufacturing processes. Early results show that Fisker’s solid-state technology enables the construction of bulk three-dimensional solid-state electrodes with 25 times more surface area than flat thin-film solid-state electrodes and extremely high electronic and ionic conductivities – enabling fast charging and cold temperature operation. As a result, Fisker’s battery delivers 2.5 times the energy density of typical lithium-ion batteries – with the potential of costing one third of the 2020 projected price of those batteries due to advances in materials and manufacturing.
Several failure modes affect solid-state batteries, including low power and low rate capability due to high contact resistance and low ionic mobility in the layered electrode structures. Delamination issues due to volume changes and residual stresses during charge/discharge processes; dendrite penetration and stability vs. metallic lithium electrodes; and low ionic diffusion, particularly in low temperature climate due to solid-state material limitations, are also roadblocks. With the newly announced technology, Fisker’s scientists are addressing these technical bottlenecks. Figure: Fisker solid-state technology is capable of constructing bulk three-dimensional solid-state electrodes with 25 times more surface area than flat thin-film solid state electrodes and extremely high electronic and ionic conductivities – enabling fast charging and cold temperature operation.
Fisker anticipates the technology may be ready for automotive applications post 2023. Such long lead times are due to the lack of supply chains with particular raw materials and appropriate manufacturing tools, as well as established quality procedures for materials repeatability. Once the technology is fully validated, the battery will deliver a vehicle range of more than 500 miles on a single charge, and charging times as low as one minute – allowing technology to bypass the internal combustion engine and push the automobile into mass electrification. Fisker is in active discussions with various industrial groups around potential non-automotive partnerships – with the possibility of battery applications that may be commercialized much earlier than 2023.
Fisker’s flexible solid-state electrode construction will enable batteries with versatile voltage and form factors. They may be wound in cylindrical cells with higher voltage output, allowing usage of current tooling and machinery for battery packs – in addition to lesser cell-to-cell connections, thermal management and safety requirements. This further reduces battery system costs.

THE FISKER EMOTION LUXURY ELECTRIC FOUR-DOOR SEDAN: CES 2018 LAUNCH

The much-anticipated 2018 launch of the Fisker EMotion luxury electric vehicle at the Consumer Electronics Show will showcase a proprietary battery module with advanced thermal management using 21700 NCM cells from LG Chem. The company has been simultaneously working on proprietary technology that will enable charging for a 127-mile range in nine minutes. Fisker’s solid-state battery and extreme fast charging technologies will be on full display at the vehicle’s launch at CES.

“Our aggressive vision for the entire EV and automotive industry, not just for Fisker Inc., revolves around making the impossible, possible – and this global solid-state battery breakthrough is reflective of our utmost seriousness in making that vision a reality,” said Henrik Fisker, chairman and CEO of Fisker Inc. “It used to be about the efficiency of the gasoline engine. Now, it’s all about who breaks the code and smashes the barriers to future battery technologies that will enable mass market electrification. Our scientists have been working tirelessly to deliver. We’ve done it, and this is just the beginning.”

“This breakthrough marks the beginning of a new era in solid-state materials and manufacturing technologies,” said Dr. Fabio Albano, VP of battery systems at Fisker Inc. “We are addressing all of the hurdles that solid-state batteries have encountered on the path to commercialization, such as performance in cold temperatures; the use of low cost and scalable manufacturing methods; and the ability to form bulk solid-state electrodes with significant thickness and high active material loadings. We are excited to build on this foundation and move the needle in energy storage.”
