ASI Drives Launches Mark 600, Poised to Replace Internal Combustion Engines
Mark 600 – Heavy Duty Fully Enclosed Transaxle
MONTGOMERYVILLE, PA, USA, 10-Oct-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — ASI Drives introduces the next generation of heavy-duty, fully enclosed transaxles with their Mark 600, set to markedly transform both indoor and outdoor material handling. An evolution of the industry-standard Mark 400, the company designed the new transaxle as a high-performance replacement for applications typically requiring internal combustion engines. The Mark 600 is part of ASI’s Viking Transaxle product line.
“The Mark 600 is possible thanks to recent improvements in battery and electronics technology,” explains John Cross, ASI Drives’ President and CTO. “When combined with our transaxle technology,” he goes on, “these improvements allowed us to develop a new transaxle capable of replacing the internal combustion engine in the outdoor material handling market.” Other markets include outdoor power equipment and floor care.
High-torque and High-speed Configurations
With a large 70 mm mount, the Mark 600 produces up to 270 Nm of torque at 60 RPM under high load in high-torque configurations. Under typical load, high-speed configurations produce 60 Nm of torque at 119 RPM. This makes it suitable for many applications, from motorized wheelbarrows, plane tuggers and trailer movers to personal scooters, large floor-cleaning machines and more.

Distinguishing features of the Mark 600 include: single-piece casting for precision gear alignment and quieter operation; bolt-on tube extensions for multiple widths without retooling; high-strength bevel gear differentials; available robust permanent magnet DC motors; easily replaceable motors and brushes; service intervals exceeding 2,000 hours.
Highly Customizable Feature Set
ASI can configure the Mark 600 to meet the demands of a variety of applications. Reduction ratios range from 24:1 to 36:1. Standard widths range from 237 mm to 596 mm, with custom widths available. Motor options include permanent magnet DC 4-pole and brushless AC and DC motors, available in 122 mm and up to 152 mm diameters, respectively. Voltages range from 12 V to 48 V DC. Axles can be hubs or custom.

SINGAPORE, 9-Jul-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — Kuehne + Nagel announced it is rolling out an AI-based digital freight platform in Asia Pacific, first starting off with Thailand. With this launch, the company is expanding its suite of online services. The AI freight platform is called etrucKNow.com and will bridge the supply and demand of overland logistics via a digital marketplace. etrucKNow will offer a faster way for customers to book trucks and an easier way for carriers to unlock business opportunities.
Thailand has been selected for the launch of the new freight platform due to its market where the road freight industry is projected to grow to a market size of over USD 31 billion by 2023. Kuehne + Nagel’s digital platform will eventually be rolled out in India, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, New Zealand and Australia in 2019 and 2020.
Simplified quotation and comparison process features are part of the new digital platform etrucKNow for the convenience of the shippers. The most competitive quotation is achieved by relying on an AI-enabled engine that takes the shipment details provided by the customer and automates the quotation comparison process by validating multiple data points. Simply put, proprietary rate engine will make a use of an AI to match shipper’s requirements with carrier availability while eliminating the manual processes.
During the launch period, customers will get additional savings through promotion codes.
The AI freight platform etrucKNow boasts real-time visibility, which is an important concern to customers and carriers. Shippers and carriers will always know in real-time where their shipments or drivers are through the etrucKNow’s real-time track and trace capabilities. They will also receive pro-active service alerts on delivery milestones.

SEAT appoints new executive Vice-president for Purchasing
ALFONSO SANCHA, NEW SEAT EXECUTIVE VICE-PRESIDENT FOR PURCHASING
MARTORELL, 22-Aug-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — SEAT announces the appointment of Alfonso Sancha as new executive Vice-president for Purchasing. He will assume his position on September 1st and will be a part of the SEAT Executive Committee. He will be replacing company Executive Committee member Klaus Ziegler who will become Head of Purchasing for connectivity, e-mobility and driver assistance systems for the Volkswagen Group worldwide.
Sancha joins the company at a time when Purchasing has expanded its responsibilities with the Volkswagen Group. He will provide additional momentum to the figures of Purchasing. Sancha aims to develop SEAT’s electric strategy within the Purchasing division, enhance its leadership in North Africa, where the company is leading supplier relations in the region, in China where SEAT is present in the framework of the joint venture between Volkswagen Group China and JAC, and support SEAT’s expansion in Latin America. In 2018, Purchasing managed a volume of 7.137 billion euros, up by 5.6% compared to the previous year (6.758 billion). The volume of purchases managed by SEAT has gone up by 23.2% in the past five years.
SEAT has also been in charge of coordinating the Volkswagen Group’s general purchasing activities since 2017 in the Iberian Peninsula for all procurements that are not directly related to vehicles, with the aim of identifying synergies and contributing to cost optimisation.
Prior to joining SEAT, Alfonso Sancha has worked extensively in the Volkswagen Group, where he previously carried out responsibilities in the areas of external Purchasing and new projects. He has also held internationally relevant positions in Germany, Mexico and China. He was the executive Vice-president for Purchasing at Volkswagen Group China from 2011 to 2014. Currently, Sancha is the Head of Purchasing of metal parts for the entire Volkswagen Group, until he joins SEAT in September.

BP and Didi Chuxing to develop a network of EV charging hubs across China through new joint venture
LONDON, 2-Aug-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — BP have agreed to form a new joint venture to build electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in China with Didi Chuxing, the world’s largest market for electric vehicles. Both companies plans to develop a network of EV charging hubs across China.
Didi is the world leader in multi-modal transportation platform. The company offers full range of app-based options, including ride-hailing, automobile solutions sharing, and other services. Currently, DiDi provides ride-hailing services in Brazil under the 99 brand, operates DiDi-branded mobility services in Mexico, Chile, Colombia and Australia, and provides taxi-hailing service in Japan through a joint venture. Approximately 550 million users and around 600,000 EVs are running on its platform in China. DiDi is committed to solve the world’s transportation, environmental and employment challenges with smart transportation innovations.
BP operates its fuels retailing and convenience business in 18 countries globally. BP has over 18,700 retail sites and with rapidly-growing presence in China.
The joint venture will provide EV charging services to DiDi’s drivers and the public with the development of standalone, high-quality and reliable charging hubs. The partners also plans to expand the partnership into loyalty and convenience offerings and other fleet services in the near future.

The venture aims to expand rapidly, with an ambition to quickly become the leading EV charging provider in China. The companies already opened a pilot site in Guangzhou in the Guangdong province that has ten fast-charging units, ranging from 60-120kW. The site will join the joint venture once live.
China has around 50% of the world’s battery electric vehicles today, it is the world’s largest and fastest-developing EV market. Around 80% of EV charging in China is expected to be done at destination, forecourt and fleet hub charge points by 2030.
BP started the roll out of ultra-fast chargers at sites in the UK following the acquisition in 2018 of BP Chargemaster, the UK’s leading electric vehicle charging company. The company also invested in StoreDot, an innovative fast-charging battery technology firm. BP is committed to be the leader in providing fuel for both conventional and electric vehicles in its businesses worldwide.
In January 2019, BP invested in leading integrated hardware and software solutions provider for electric vehicle (EV) charging in China, PowerShare. PowerShare offers an online platform connecting EV drivers, charge point operators and power suppliers. In July 2018, BP invested $10 million in the NIO Capital US Dollar Fund to support the fund’s work exploring opportunities in China’s new energy vehicle ecosystem.

DÜSSELDORF, 24-Jul-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — Horst Binnig, 60, to retire from Rheinmetall Automotive AG and the Group holding company Rheinmetall AG after 20 successful years in the Automotive sector. Binnig, currently serving as Chairman of the Executive Board of Rheinmetall Automotive AG and as a member of the Executive Board of the Group holding company Rheinmetall AG, has informed the Supervisory Board about his intention to leave for personal reasons. Upon closing of the succession plan with a smooth transition of leadership positions, Horst Binnig will actually be leaving the Group by the end of 2019.
Binnig has joined the Automotive sector of Rheinmetall Group in 1999 initially starting in the Corporate Development. He then led the Automotive subsidiary KS Aluminium-Technologie. Prior to joining Rheinmetall Group Horst Binnig was working for KACO Group and Hengstler GmbH. He was instrumental in helping establish Rheinmetall’s second major joint venture with SAIC (Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation) in China. Furthermore, Binnig led the vigorous expansion of Rheinmetall Automotive’s activities in China as part of the company’s internationalization strategy.

RIEDRICHSHAFEN, 16-Jul-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — ZF announced the world premiere of its first 2-speed e-drive system meant for passenger cars. The system integrates an advanced electric motor with a shift element and appropriate power electronics.
Extended driving range for each battery charge is achieved through the improvement in energy conversion efficiency compared to previous e-drives. Due to its compact design the new drive system is of particular interest to passenger cars in the compact class and thanks to its modular approach in the design the unit can easily be scaled up for use in sports and performance vehicles.
The passenger car sector already sees the next generation of electromobility with the introduction of ZF’s new electric 2-speed drive solution.
Commenting on the improvement in the energy conversion efficiency, Bert Hellwig, Head of System House at ZF’s E-Mobility division, said:
“For electric vehicles in everyday use, it is important to obtain as much range as possible from each battery charge. Every percent of improvement in energy conversion efficiency translates into two percent more range. Bringing together our know-how in relation to electric motors, gearboxes, and power electronics ensures that we achieve the best possible range from each battery charge.”
ZF leveraged its expertise in systems to work on and develop a new electric motor with a maximum power rating of 140 kW paired with a two-stage shift element in order to increase the performance rating of the new electric axle drive system.
Extending the range comes from the new 2-speed drive which consumes less energy as shifts take place at 70 km/h. It can extend the range of up to five percent as compared to a one-speed unit. Other shift strategies are also possible by connecting to the vehicle’s CAN communication possibly linking to digital map material and GPS. A possibly use is for the vehicle to predictively switch into Eco-mode, if it identifies from the GPS route programming how far the next charging station is. Furthermore, effective shifts will also be possible in taking into account the topography on the interstate, and on inter-city trips. Over-the-air updates are available for the software in the drive thanks to the network link to the Cloud services.
Presently, car markers can rely on two options when using the new new 2-speed drive to improve energy conversion efficiency. The OEM can either choose to go for an extended range while retaining the same size of accumulator, or utilize a smaller accumulator.
The unit is designed in a way that optimizes installation space, the 2-speed system is a perfect fit for compact passenger cars where interior space is at a premium. At the same time, the 2-speed concept offers also benefits for OEMs who are pursuing performance.
.Bert Hellwig explained further:
“Until now, with electric motors, vehicle manufacturers have had to choose between high initial torque and a high top speed. We are now resolving this conflict and the new drive will be compatible for performance and heavier vehicles – for example for passenger cars towing a trailer.”
The modular approach of ZF combines the 2-speed gearbox with even more powerful electric motors rated for up to 250 kW, which results in an enhanced acceleration and, potentially, faster top speeds. The new drive system can meet a variety of requirements with this modular concept.

New SGS lab becomes one of the most advanced e-mobility test centers in Germany
MUNICH, 5-Jul-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — SGS announced it has inaugurated an advanced e-mobility laboratory focused on safety and functional testing as well as environmental simulations. The new electromobility test center is located in the Gelting-Ost Industrial Park in the city of Geretsried, Upper Bavaria, some 35 kilometers south of Munich, Germany. The testing center will rely on 40 SGS experts who will test traction batteries and components of electric vehicles for performance and safety.
The facility of the multifunctional laboratory will be approximately 4,000 m2 housing a number of test chambers and test benches that will help lab experts to work more efficiently. Extensive hardness tests on traction batteries from electric vehicles will be carried out along a test track. The performance and safety of high-voltage storage systems will be assessed by using vibration, mechanical shock, temperature and humidity tests, as well as treatments with salt mist, dust, mixed gases and chemical substances.
Commenting on the launch of the new e-mobility laboratory, Christoph Dyck, Director of Transportation at SGS, said:
“Our new e-mobility laboratory in Gelting is an investment in the future. Here, we can grow in perspective with additional services for automotive industries. The concept of test chambers is precisely tailored to our workflows. The test facilities are optimally arranged, which makes more efficient laboratory processes possible.”
The new e-mobility lab of SGS will conduct not only battery testing, but will also support automakers and suppliers with testing of electronic and electromechanical components, such as connectors, and engine components of electric, hybrid and conventional vehicles. The lab will also examine infrastructure, including charging stations and charging cables. Environmental conditions that the components will have to withstand such as mechanical, climatic, corrosive and electrical will also be simulated using test benches in the e-mobility testing center in the Gelting-Ost Industrial Park.

Scania’s 2030 vision for urban transportation: NXT concept vehicle
SÖDERTÄLJE, Sweden, 12-Jun-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — Scania has just unveiled self-driving battery electric urban concept vehicle called NXT. The concept vehicle has been designed with flexibility in mind – it can shift from transporting commuters to and from work in mornings and evenings to delivering goods during the day up to collecting refuse at night.
Scania’s DNA, the modular system, has now been taken to the next level by the company’s engineers in developing a concept vehicle that can change shape for different urban assignments.
In a vision for the future of transport, NXT’s front and rear drive modules can be fitted to a bus body, a distribution truck body or a refuse collector. The innovative concept vehicle’s bus module is currently on display at the UITP Global Public Transport Summit in Stockholm, 10–12 June.
In the quest for lower emissions and less congestion thousands of cities around the world are presently seeking a change in urban transport. Infrastructural and technological breakthroughs in electric and autonomous vehicles are regarded as key enablers for cities around the world when shifting to a sustainable and greener transport system.
Commenting on the NXT concept vehicle, Scania’s President and CEO Henrik Henriksson, said:
“NXT is a vision of the future for transport in cities. Several of these technologies have yet to fully mature but for us it’s been important to actually build a concept vehicle to visibly and technically demonstrate ideas of what is within reach. NXT is designed for 2030 and beyond while incorporating several cutting-edge features that are already available.”
While vehicles play an important part in the urban transport, there’s more that needs to be done into the ecosystem for the real change to happen. The infrastructure, for one, requires a significant development to cater both for electrified and autonomous vehicles. Furthermore, the 24/7 flow of people and goods in cities will have to be coherently addressed versus disparately planned. And the commercial transport is, in many different ways, the pulse of the city’s transportation system. It is a vital part of how we get to work or school and how food is delivered to shops and restaurants. It is also very important part of how medicines reach to hospitals and how refuse is collected and removed. Presently, the transport and people/goods flow situation in cities is far from being optimised. Goods are delivered during the morning rush hour while most people are also on the move. At the same time, commercial transport is largely barred from city centres during nights due to the noise.
Henrik Henriksson commented further:
“We at Scania can’t redraw the entire transport system for cities. What we can do is inspire change and that is the idea behind NXT – to think about transport and vehicles in a different and sustainable way.”
In its core concept, the public transport has always been about sharing. Sharing has now been taken to the next level with Scania’s NXT concept. By relying on a higher degree of automation, it will be simpler to introduce greater flexibility in public transport system.
Commenting on the NXT concept, Robert Sjödin, NXT Project Manager, said:
“This is something new, something very different. Yet flexible design and modularised units lie very much at the core of Scania.”
Substantially reducing weight, the 8-metre-long bus module is built as one composite unit. In order to contribute to better weight distribution, the cylindrical cell batteries are organised under the floor making a use of otherwise dead space. Weighing less than 8 tonnes the vehicle’s range with present-day available batteries is estimated to be around 245 kilometers.
Sjödin elaborated further:
“Continuous improvement in small steps has been the hallmark of Scania. We are now taking a giant leap into the future. This vehicle will provide invaluable tangible data in our continued development of electrified autonomous vehicles.”
