Affalterbach

Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+: combined fuel consumption: 9.3 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 212 g/km*Affalterbach. Mercedes-AMG launches its performance offering for the new GLE generation with the GLE 53 4MATIC+ (combined fuel consumption: 9.3 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 212 g/km)[1]. The basis for the signature AMG driving dynamics is provided by the 320 kW (435 hp) 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line engine, the fully variable all-wheel drive, the agile 9-speed automatic transmission, the AMG-specific drive programs and the AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL air suspension based on AMG RIDE CONTROL+ with electro-mechanical roll stabilisation. Thanks to the AMG-specific radiator grille with 15 vertical strips, it is immediately obvious that it is part of the AMG family. Numerous options such as the selectable performance exhaust system and the AMG steering wheel buttons make the driving experience even more emotional.
“As the inventors of the performance SUV, it is important to us to continue to be at the top with the new generation of the GLE when it comes to innovations, driving dynamics, individuality and design. The first step here is the new Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+, with which we offer our customers more power than the predecessor model as well as our fully variable all-wheel technology. Not least of all its striking radiator grill shows our new GLE 53 as a fully-fledged member of the AMG family”, states Tobias Moers, Chief Executive of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.
[1] The stated figures were determined in accordance with the prescribed measuring method. These are the “NEDC CO2 figures” according to Art. 2 No. 1 Implementing Regulation (EU) 2017/1153. The fuel consumption figures were calculated based on these figures.
Always staying nicely in line: six-cylinder engine with twin charging
Its centrepiece is the electrified 3.0-litre engine featuring twin-turbocharging and an electric auxiliary compressor. The 6-cylinder in-line engine generates 320 kW (435 hp) and delivers maximum torque of 520 Nm. Its EQ Boost starter generator briefly provides an additional 16 kW of output plus 250 Nm of torque and additionally feeds the 48 V on-board electrical system.
The EQ Boost starter-alternator combines a starter motor and alternator in a powerful electric motor and is fitted between the engine and transmission. This innovation as well as the intelligent charging via an electric auxiliary compressor and an exhaust gas turbocharger all have the same goal: to enhance the hallmark AMG performance and driving dynamics, but also to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. And this move has been a successful one: The GLE 53 4MATIC+ accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds and achieves an electronically limited speed of 250 km/h.
It really turns on the pressure: electric auxiliary compressor
The electric auxiliary compressor builds up a high level of boost pressure without any delays until the big exhaust gas turbocharger kicks in. As a result the 3.0-litre engine reacts extremely spontaneously and provides a dynamic response without turbo lag. An additional bonus is the high level of refinement of the six-cylinder in-line engine.
It will be electrifying: 48 V on-board electrical system
But the EQ Boost starter-alternator can do even more. It also provides the 48 V on-board electrical system with electricity. The conventional 12 V electrical system is likewise supplied from the new network – by means of a DC/DC converter. The 48 V battery increases the overall battery capacity in the vehicle, which allows supplying more electrical energy. An additional advantage: the same power requires only a quarter of the current of a conventional system. The result is that the wiring can be thinner and therefore lighter, which indirectly contributes to saving fuel. The existing 12 V system supplies power to consumers such as lights, cockpit, infotainment displays and control units.
It also does hybrid: EQ Boost starter-alternator
The EQ Boost starter generator is a key component of the 48 V system and not only serves as an alternator, but is also responsible for hybrid functions. This allows fuel savings that were previously reserved for high-voltage hybrid technology. For the first time, the EQ Boost starter-alternator is also responsible for idle speed control.
The hybrid functions include boost with 16 kW of output and 250 Nm of torque, energy recovery, shifting of the load point, gliding mode and the virtually imperceptible restarting of the engine with the start/stop function.
Because the belt drive for ancillary components on the front edge of the engine is omitted, the installation length of the new six-cylinder engine is also significantly reduced compared with conventional six-cylinder engines. This creates space for an exhaust gas aftertreatment system mounted near the engine, which is therefore particularly efficient. The particulate filter is the only part of the emission control system that is under the floor.
A special acoustic experience comes courtesy of the optional, selectable AMG Performance exhaust system. The variable adjustable exhaust flaps give the option to change the sound of the vehicle at the press of a button. Depending on the drive program, the sound characteristics change from unobtrusive comfort through to maximum emotive appeal.
Speedy shifting: AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G
The AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9-speed automatic transmission (TCT = Torque-Clutch Transmission) ensures emotional gear shifting with extremely short shift times. It is optimally tuned to the engine and promises agile pulling off typical of AMG as well as speedy shifting – regardless of an automatic or manual transmission via the steering wheel shift paddles. Upshifts or downshifts are implemented instantly. Especially in the “Sport+” and in manual driving modes, the transmission is very responsive. Multiple downshifting enables fast bursts of speed, while the double-clutching function makes shift operations acoustically more emotional.
Unlimited grip: AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive
The new GLE 53 4MATIC+ is equipped for maximum traction and dynamics with AMG Performance 4MATIC+ fully variable all-wheel drive. The intelligent steering variably links the permanently driven rear axle with the front axle and continually calculates the optimum torque distribution – depending on the driving situation and the driver's wishes. The all-wheel drive thus improves longitudinal dynamics as well as traction and lateral dynamics. The outcome: yet more powerful acceleration from a standing position and for short sprints.
Total stabilisation: AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension
Redeveloped in Affalterbach, the AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension based on AMG RIDE CONTROL+ air suspension forms the basis for a driving experience that is characterised by a high level of agility, neutral cornering behaviour and optimal traction. A new feature makes a significant contribution to the AMG-specific tuning for high levels of driving dynamics: the active roll stabilisation with two electro-mechanic actuators working independently of one another on the front and rear axle as well as fully variable torque distribution.
Not only does the system reduce rolling movements when cornering, it also enables more precise tuning of the cornering and load change properties. In addition, it increases the drive comfort when driving straight ahead because stimuli are balanced out by one-sided road bumps, for example. Movements in the body can be actively and optimally adjusted to the driving conditions. This means that the AMG-typical form of the driving characteristics regarding dynamics, precision and response can be even more intensively experienced by the driver.
Another benefit in comparison to the usual hydraulic-based systems is the significantly faster response. The AMG control can adapt the driving status up to 1000 times per second. The sampling rate is thus a mere one-thousandth of a second. There is also the low weight of the components in comparison to the usual solutions.
Especially long breath: air suspension with continuously adjustable damping
The AMG RIDE CONTROL+ air suspension with particularly sporty spring/damper set-up and adaptive adjustable damping ADS+ (Adaptive Damping System) combines outstanding driving dynamics with high ride comfort. The damping characteristics can be preselected in three modes, “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport+”, allowing a significantly more noticeable differentiation between excellent long-distance comfort and sporty driving dynamics. In addition, there are two new levels for off-road use – “Trail” and “Sand”.
Thanks to pneumatic self-levelling at the front and rear axle, the GLE 53 4MATIC+ maintains a constant ride height regardless of the vehicle load. The vehicle level is generally lowered by 15 mm in the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programmes “Sport” and “Sport+”. In the “Comfort” drive programme, the vehicle is lowered by 15 mm from a speed of 120 km/h. This reduces aerodynamic drag and, in turn, fuel consumption. In addition, handling stability is improved thanks to a lower centre of gravity. In order to increase the ground clearance on poor road surfaces or on ramps, the vehicle body level can be raised by up to 55 mm at the touch of a button with the engine running – both with the car stationary and in motion.
Everything under control: Sports steering and high-performance braking system
The electromechanical speed-sensitive power steering has a variable ratio. It wins over customers with AMG-specific rack and pinion ratio and precise feedback. In addition, steering power assistance is adjusted in the two stages “Comfort” or “Sport”. The configuration is automatically activated based on the selected AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programme. They can optionally be personalised at any time in the “Individual” drive programme.
The large sized high-performance braking system reliably slows down the performance SUV even with heavier loads and short braking distances. 400 x 36 mm internally ventilated and perforated integral brake disks are used on the front axle as well as 2-piston fixed callipers painted silver with black AMG lettering. On the rear, the internally ventilated integral brake disks measure 345 x 25 mm and have a 1-piston floating calliper.
Select your programme: AMG DYNAMIC SELECT
The GLE 53 4MATIC+ has seven drive programmes: The levels “Slippery”, “Comfort”, “Sport”, “Sport+” and “Individual” are complemented by two off-road-specific settings: “Trail” and “Sand”. AMG DYNAMIC SELECT adapts important parameters such as the responsiveness of the engine and transmission, the characteristic curve of the accelerator and steering, the suspension damping or even the vehicle's sound. Selected using the paddle in the centre console or the AMG steering wheel buttons, the programmes are then visualised in the instrument cluster and on the multimedia display.
“Slippery”: optimised for slippery road conditions, with reduced power and a flat torque curve for a driving impression oriented toward stability. “Comfort”: comfortable and fuel-efficient driving, e.g. thanks to early upshifts. Suspension and steering are set up for an emphasis on comfort. “Sport”: sporty characteristics thanks to a more agile response to the driver's accelerator pedal input, shorter shift times, earlier downshifts and significantly more emotive gearshifts owing to double de-clutching. A more dynamic suspension and steering set-up. “Sport+”: extremely sporty characteristics thanks to an even more agile throttle response, increased acoustic emphasis on double de-clutching during downshifts as well as selective torque control on upshifts with cylinder suppression for optimal shift times. Increased idle speed for faster pulling away. An even more dynamic set-up for suspension, steering and drivetrain. “Individual”: individual adjustment of the drive system, transmission, AMG DYNAMICS, suspension and exhaust system. “Trail”: safe driving at maximum performance on soft, muddy or slippery ground. “Sand”: sporty set-up for the best possible grip and steerability on sandy slopes and in desert dunes. AMG DYNAMICS vehicle dynamics control is integrated into the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programmes. In the “Basic”, “Advanced” and “Pro” levels, it influences e.g. the control strategies of the ESP ® (Electronic Stability Program) or the all-wheel drive. The intelligent pilot control anticipates the desired vehicle behaviour based on the driver's actions and the sensor data. The spectrum ranges from extremely stable to highly dynamic. Additionally there are the “Traction” and “Slide” levels in the off-road “Trail” and “Sand” drive programmes when the ESP® is deactivated.
Quite the eye-catcher: exterior with AMG-specific radiator grille
The appearance of the GLE 53 4MATIC+ captivates thanks to its exclusivity, powerful sportiness and progressive dominance. Thanks to the AMG-specific radiator grille with 15 vertical chromed strips, it is immediately obvious that it is part of the AMG family. Equally striking is the star in the double ring, the narrow headlamps and the striking A-Wing in the front apron. Apart from the slats in the outer air inlets and the trim element on the A-Wing, the front splitter is also silver chrome-plated. The wheel arches in the same colour as the car provide space for the large wheels – mounted with 20-inch light alloy wheels with AMG lettering as standard. There are seven rim variants optionally available from 20 to 22 inch.
The horizontal chromed diffuser strip in the pronounced rear apron and the special exhaust system with two chromed twin tailpipes underline the powerful appearance from the rear and emphasis the effect of the width. The optional AMG Night Package further enhances the vehicle. It includes heat-insulating, dark tinted windows as well as front splitter, trim elements in the front apron and the outer air inlets, mirror covers, window frames, roof railing, diffuser and tailpipe trim in refined black.
The colour of love: interior design with red accents
The GLE 53 4MATIC+ can be recognised by the characteristic red colour accents. This starts with the seats, fitted as standard with covers in ARTICO / microfibre DINAMICA man-made leather black with red contrasting topstitching. They not only offer optimal lateral support, but also have an AMG-specific design and “AMG” badge in the front seat backrest. The top part of the instrument panel is covered in ARTICO man-made leather. The black roof liner and the trim elements in aluminium brushed with light longitudinal grain underscore the sporty appearance.
Further elements to individualise the interior include different leather seat covers and a wide range of high-quality trim elements, among other items. The carbon AMG trim elements impart a particularly sporty feel to the interior.
An SUV highlight is the optional, foldable third row of seats, which make the GLE 53 4MATIC+ a seven-seater. Thanks to the Easy Entry function of the fully electrically adjustable second seat row, the two rearmost passengers can conveniently reach their seats.
Stylishly chic: AMG-specific displays in the MBUX system
The innovative operating and display concept MBUX is included as standard in the GLE 53 4MATIC+ and contains numerous AMG-specific content. With the widescreen cockpit, the instrument cluster and touchscreen multimedia display optically combine into one unit. Numerous functions can also be activated via the intelligent voice-operated control “Hey Mercedes”. The optional MBUX Interior Assist also allows intuitive, natural operation of different comfort and MBUX functions by movement recognition and gestures.
The instrument cluster has its own specific details such as the AMG start-up menu and the four selectable styles: “Classic”, “Sport”, AMG exclusive “Supersport” and “Discreet”. When the AMG-specific DYNAMIC SELECT drive programmes “Trail” and “Sand” are activated, off-road-specific settings such as slope, incline and level can be selected and displayed on the instrument cluster. Rocker switches are embedded in the centre console for displaying and controlling the drive programmes, transmission, suspension, ESP® and exhaust system.
Hands sitting pretty on the steering wheel: AMG Performance steering wheel
The AMG Performance steering wheel in black Nappa leather with red contrasting topstitching and red 12-o'clock marking combines maximum functionality, high-quality haptics and perfect ergonomics. Apart from the aluminium shift paddles, it also impresses thanks to the touch control buttons which are intuitive to operate. The entire infotainment system can be controlled with swiping finger movements.
Innovative steering wheel buttons optionally enhance the steering wheel with a round controller with an integrated display beneath the right-hand steering-wheel spoke, plus two vertically positioned colour display buttons with switches beneath the left-hand steering-wheel spoke.
Drive better: improve your skills with AMG TRACK PACE
With the optional extra AMG TRACK PACE, MBUX is enhanced with a virtual engineer which enables up to 80 vehicle-specific data as well as times on closed routes outside of the public traffic area to be recorded and analysed in detail. Many of these values can be displayed if desired on the widescreen cockpit or in the optional head-up display in real-time. After putting in some fast laps, the driver can use the data to analyse and, if necessary, improve their driving skills. In addition, acceleration and deceleration values (e.g. 0-100 km/h, ¼ mile, 100-0 km/h) can be measured and saved.
The driver can record any circuits and open circuits him or herself and can save them for later vehicle data recording. Thanks to a newly developed algorithm which determines the vehicle position as precisely as possible, AMG TRACK PACE even detects when the circuit has been left or it has been shortened. This is done using GPS data as well as the sensors available in the vehicle (acceleration, gyroscope, steering angle, wheel speeds).
The additional smartphone app enhances AMG TRACK PACE on these circuits with functionalities such as video recording of the journey, individualisation options for the recorded videos and photos as well as sharing the experiences on social networks.
Sporty fragrance: fuel for the senses
There is an exclusive fragrance for the interior, named “AMG#63” as part of the AIR-BALANCE package. It is an inspiring, sporty scent to match the spirit of the performance sports car brand.

Mercedes-Benz at the Mobile World Congress 2019: Cooperation as a key factor of successful digitisation

20.

February 2019

Stuttgart/Barcelona

Stuttgart/Barcelona. At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) from 25 to 28 February 2019 in Barcelona, Mercedes-Benz and the cross-Group initiative DigitalLife@Daimler are putting the spotlight on the significance of strategic partnerships for the digital transformation. Across an area spanning 320 square metres, technologies and innovations from various sectors can be experienced: for example the big-data platform eXtollo, which Daimler has developed on the basis of Microsoft Azure, and future mobility solutions for the bus. Also being presented are the CLA Coupé, which is celebrating its European premiere, the new Mercedes-Benz EQC and the new Mercedes-Benz Actros. On 25 February Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars plus Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, will be making a joint appearance. Current information at #FutureOfMobility #MWC19.
The Mobile World Congress is now a firm fixture in Daimler AG's show calendar: this is the third time the car company has had its own stand at the tech congress. Its presence aims to make the various digitisation activities in the Group visible and tangible. This involvement is in conjunction with the DigitalLife@Daimler initiative: it provides impetus, develops new formats and acts as an intermediary between divisions – so that everyone in the company can benefit from the opportunities provided by the digital transformation and help shape the change.
“For us, digitisation is more than zeros and ones. It is also a mindset. For us, an open corporate culture is just as much a part of the digital transformation as innovative ideas and new products”, say Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.
As we open up strategically to new ideas and ways of working, the importance of new partnerships increases. An example of this is Daimler AG's cooperation with Microsoft in building up the global big-data platform eXtollo. Behind it is the first cloud-based solution for evaluating large quantities of data on the basis of Microsoft's cloud and data platform Azure, which meets the car company's high security requirements. Big-data analyses are used, for example, in vehicle maintenance and development. The new cloud service makes it easier for Daimler employees to exchange data quickly, regardless of their location. The company can control and encrypt access to the data itself.
At the Mobile World Congress Daimler boss Dieter Zetsche will meet with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella on 25 February 2019 from 5 p.m. They will talk about new cooperations and the technologies of the future and a corporate culture which is necessary to guide two heavyweights like Microsoft and Daimler successfully through the digital transformation.
Stand concept focuses on variety and dialogue
Visitors will find the exhibition area of Mercedes-Benz and DigitalLife@Daimler in Hall 6. The first ports of call for all fans of automotive innovations are the CLA Coupé, which is celebrating its European premiere at the MWC and putting the topic of gaming front and centre, and the “Mercedes-Benz of electric vehicles”: the new Mercedes-Benz EQC.
On board the EQC visitors can discover features such as the latest generation of the multimedia system MBUX – Mercedes Benz User Experience. There is also an MBUX demonstrator. The innovative operating system will later be part of the CLA Coupé's standard equipment. The CLA has been equipped with another highlight specially for its appearance at the show: a new gaming application. It facilitates a look ahead to the driving experience of tomorrow. For thanks to autonomous driving, in the future there will be more time on board a car to make use of the entertainment on offer.
First series truck with outside-mirror camera instead of outside mirrors, plus multimedia cockpit
The opposite side of the stand puts the focus on the Truck division. A walk-on 1:1 model of the new Mercedes-Benz Actros is on display. A look into the cockpit makes it clear to what extent topics such as digitisation, partially automated driving and networking are also revolutionising the driving experience in the truck. The most striking highlights of the new Actros are the outside-mirror camera system, which affords optimum vision, and the intuitively controllable multimedia cockpit in the interior. The heavyweight's key and most spectacular new feature is the Active Drive Assist. It sees Mercedes-Benz Trucks bringing partially automated driving to series production. The new Active Drive Assist can brake, accelerate and steer autonomously. The equipment also includes the Mercedes-Benz Truck App Portal from the telematics provider Fleetboard. Apps such as Fleetboard Driver make the driver's work easier and can be used in the multimedia cockpit.
The connecting element at the centre of the show stand is what is known as the “Campus”. It offers a stage for innovations from different corporate units of Daimler AG. Many of the projects unveiled here, including the big-data platform eXtollo, are benefiting from new forms of cooperation. By presenting new products and features which have yet to reach series maturity in some cases, Daimler is entering into a dialogue with partners and customers at an early stage. This approach underlines the company's conviction that innovations must follow people's needs and not the other way round.
The innovations being presented and discussed include the following:
DigitalLife Crowd Ideation Platform: on this internal platform Daimler employees can suggest ideas as part of competitions – Challenges – and comment on and assess then and even invest virtual money. More than 115,000 employees have already registered. Now the initiative is entering the next stage and is opening up the platform externally. Transparency, interaction and openness to new partnerships are thus advancing to a new level. Digital travel companion for more road safety: In Barcelona, Daimler Financial Services is for the first time presenting a Proof of Concept for an app which combines behavioural and personal data from a smartphone and wearable with real-time data such as traffic data. As a digital travel companion the app supports the driver with individual recommendations on long car journeys. It is a digital addition to the drowsiness warner ATTENTION ASSIST from Mercedes-Benz, already installed as standard. As an app the service can be used irrespective of the brand and vehicle model. Customer Journey Bus: using selected scenarios from the Innovation Lab Mobility Solutions, Daimler Buses is demonstrating how the travelling experience is set to change for bus passengers. At Mobility Solutions, Daimler Buses is working closely with startups and other partners. At the MWC the Lab is presenting the “Customer Journey” of the future at the MWC by way of example. It begins with smart and flexible planning of the itinerary, continues with immersive-gaming offers during the journey and extends to interactive sightseeing including real-time information on the windows of the bus. In the Campus area the exhibitors are also inviting visitors to daily “DigitalLife TechTalks”. In three to four discussion panels each day, experts discuss a variety of trend topics such as Urban Mobility, Intrapreneurship, Fit&Healthy and Digital Transformation in Formula 1. As part of the TechTalks Daimler is presenting features such as the app pacTris for Mercedes-Benz vehicles. PacTris is a digital loading assistant which helps even during the shopping experience when it comes to the question of whether and how the products and packages chosen best fit in the boot. Following the big success during pilots for the smart, pacTris is now being integrated as a new function for Mercedes-Benz vehicles.
Two stands, one aim: MWC and 4YFN
In parallel with the Mobile World Congress the startup fair “Four Years From Now” (4YFN) is taking place in Barcelona. DigitalLife@Daimler also has a stand there. In terms of content the presence follows on from the presentation at the MWC, by making the strategic significance of the DigitalLife crowd ideas platform tangible with the aid of concrete examples: internal startups from Daimler, which have submitted their ideas on the platform and put them up for discussion, are presenting the current status of their projects in the inspiring framework of 4YFN.
What exactly is DigitalLife@Daimler?
Daimler has already been investing in the digitisation of all its business processes for many years. In order to shape this change already, from a position of leadership, the company wants to strengthen all of its global units to enable them to form the basis for the successful implementation of new business models with an emphasis on the company's 5C strategy. We shall: strengthen our core business (CORE), lead in new future fields (CASE), adapt our corporate culture (CULTURE) and adapt our divisional structure (COMPANY). The benchmark for each of these modules is our fifth and most important C: our CUSTOMERS. For a long time now, Daimler has made the digital transformation a key component of its corporate strategy. With DigitalLife@Daimler we are promoting the digital transformation in all divisions at Daimler and driving forward digital issues with an integrated and cross-divisional approach.

Driving Performance on land and on water: Stronger and lighter

14.

February 2019

Affalterbach/Miami

combined fuel consumption: 11.3 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 257 g/km*Affalterbach/Miami. Today Mercedes-AMG and Cigarette Racing presented the “41’ AMG Carbon Edition” at the Miami International Boat Show. As the eleventh jointly developed boat in this longstanding partnership, this special edition sets new standards in terms of performance, handling and versatility. Its systematic lightweight construction and design are inspired by the current Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4-door Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 11.3 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 257 g/km).
The stated figures were determined in accordance with the prescribed measuring method. These are the “NEDC CO2 figures” according to Art. 2 No. 1 Implementing Regulation (EU) 2017/1153. The fuel consumption figures were calculated based on these figures. Further information on the vehicles on offer, including the WLTP values, can be found for each country at www.mercedes-benz.com
Robust, lightweight carbon-fibre components are installed in the 41’ AMG Carbon Edition and the boat features an optimized centre of gravity for ideal handling. “For twelve years we have been exploring the limits of performance on land and at sea with Cigarette Racing. Inspired by the incredible new Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4-door Coupé, the 41’ AMG Carbon Edition impresses with its extremely high performance and its expressive design”, says Tobias Moers, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.
To achieve dynamic performance coupled with versatility, the Cigarette Racing team engineers followed a single design aim in their development work: weight reduction. Compared to the GT R Performance boat of 2017, the engineers were able to save around 250 kilograms of weight thanks to an optimised mixture of lightweight materials which includes carbon-fibre. The hull of the 41-foot (12.5-metre) long vessel uses innovative sandwich construction with carbon-fibre structural laminates on both sides of a lightweight core. This allows a more rigid structure of considerably reduced weight. Furthermore, the deck, rudder, roof lining and hardtop of the 41’ AMG Carbon Edition are also made of carbon-fibre. This lightweight construction also ensured it was possible to lower the boat's centre of gravity, improving the handling during high speed manoeuvres.
High performance on water
The 41’ AMG Carbon Edition is powered by four Mercury Racing 400R outboard engines. Together they generate 1177 kW (1,600 hp), giving the boat a top speed of 142 km/h. These are extraordinary performance figures in this boat class, which combines the user-friendliness of outboard engines with a spacious interior. It also allows larger passenger groups to be accommodated in luxurious surroundings. For example, the 41’ AMG Carbon Edition is able to carry eight passengers at maximum speed or up to 20 passengers at cruising speed. Thanks to lightweight construction and power, the 41’ AMG Carbon Edition offers an attractive combination of performance, excellent handling and versatility, attributes it shares with the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4-door Coupé.
The design of the 41’ AMG Carbon Edition
“The new Cigarette Racing boat underlines the current brand aesthetics of Mercedes-AMG, which makes the passion for aesthetics and power noticeable. The strong brand graphics becomes the symbol of this experience”, says Gorden Wagener,
Chief Design Officer Daimler AG. “Thus, the Performance Luxury by Mercedes-AMG can also be experienced at sea.”
The striking design of the boat is the result of close collaboration between the Cigarette Racing Team and Mercedes-Benz designers, who developed the paint finish and the graphic design of the hull. The hull is painted in designo graphite grey magno, a finish developed exclusively for the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door Coupé. The hallmark graphic design derives its special appeal from the contrast between matte and high-gloss areas interacting with bright red.
These central design features are continued in the interior of the boat, where they create an unmistakable Mercedes-AMG interior. For example, the tailored seat upholstery is colour-coordinated with the exterior and seam patterns exclusively designed for this special edition. Additionally, the interior features innovative “Cigarette Cool” upholstery which is able to reflect up to 30 percent of the absorbed heat. This technology made a darker colour choice possible in the interior, while retaining a comfortable and luxurious atmosphere. The cockpit is equipped with three multifunctional 17-inch full-HD Garmin displays with touchscreens. The displays show GPS coordinates, navigation charts and engine/operating data. They can also be used to control the onboard ambient lighting.
The land-based role model: the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door Coupé
The land-based role model for the Cigarette Racing 41’ AMG Carbon Edition is the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door Coupé, which is also prominently displayed at the Miami International Boat Show. The Coupé is the third vehicle and the first four-door sports car to be developed entirely in-house by the performance brand. Technical highlights of the new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door Coupé include active rear-wheel steering for great agility and stability, an electronically extendable rear spoiler for optimum downforce at different speeds, an electronic rear axle with limited slip differential and a specially adapted AMG Ride Control sport suspension based on Air Body Control.
The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 is powered by a hand-built AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine developing 424 kW (577 hp) and 800 Nm of peak torque; the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S develops 463 kW (630 hp) and a peak torque of 900 Nm. This addition to the AMG GT family opens the segment up to customers seeking a vehicle which offers the impressive Driving Performance of the two-door AMG GT sports car combined with day-to-day suitability and ample space for four passengers.
Cooperation between Mercedes-AMG and Cigarette Racing
Mercedes-AMG and Cigarette Racing have worked together since 2007, above all with joint customer and marketing activities. Whether on water or on land, Mercedes-AMG and Cigarette Racing share similar DNA. Both companies have their roots in racing, and both are inspired by the same values. This makes them ideal partners who are jointly redefining the limits of design and performance. These 38 (11.6 m) to 60-foot (15.2 m) long motor boats by the American specialist are among the world's fastest and most exclusive racing boats. Customers receive tailor-made, hand-finished quality that has been tested under extreme conditions – both by Mercedes-AMG and by Cigarette Racing.
