Three-day pilot operation during IT-Trans, a conference and trade fair for public transportation Around 1,000 passengers used the on-demand ridesharing service User feedback will be used to further develop moovel on-demand Stuttgart/Karlsruhe, 20 March 2018. The Karlsruhe Transport Authority (KVV) and moovel Group GmbH are pleased to report that the pilot of the on-demand ridesharing service in Karlsruhe was a success: around 1,000 passengers used the service to move from point A to point B during IT-Trans.
This year 6,000 people attended IT-Trans, and the trade fair and conference was a great success for moovel. Together with the Karlsruhe Transport Authority (KVV), the mobility company piloted the moovel on-demand ridesharing service. The service was comprised of 10 Mercedes-Benz V-Class sedans that could be flexibly booked for free using the app “KVV.mobil – powered by moovel”. If multiple people wanted to take a similar route, the app’s algorithm pooled the requests so that the passengers were able to share a single shuttle, which is known as pooling.
“We would like to thank the hosts of IT-Trans for a very successful event and for the opportunity to present our moovel on-demand ridesharing service. Together with the Karlsruher Verkehrsverbund (KVV), we were able to offer attendees and Karlsruhe residents a new mobility service. And 1,000 passengers have used this innovative service to reach their destinations,” said Daniela Gerd tom Markotten, CEO of moovel Group GmbH.
With the ridesharing service during IT-Trans, the Karlsruher Verkehrsverbund (KVV) also took a new approach to mobility. Alexander Pischon, CEO of the KVV, was also pleased with the results of the test phase: “The three days of pilot operations showed us that this kind of on-demand shuttle can be a beneficial and flexible addition to our efficient public transportation network because it is primarily focused on the individual needs of the users.”
Results of pilot operation
Around 1,000 passengers used the service during the three days of pilot operation. The service was in particularly high demand in the mornings when passengers were on their way to the trade fair, as well as in the evenings. Randolf Wöhrl, responsible for on-demand projects at the moovel Group, said: “We have learned a lot thanks to the high demand and the valuable feedback we got from passengers. moovel on-demand calculates the travel time based on real-time traffic data. During the test phase in Karlsruhe, for example, we learned that we can further optimize our real-time routing when there is a great deal of construction in the area. We will adapt our algorithm accordingly.”
During IT-Trans, moovel on-demand was integrated into the KVV.mobil app – powered by moovel as an additional mobility option
People want access to mobility – anytime, anywhere, at their fingertips. The Karlsruher Verkehrsverbund (KVV) and the moovel Group have worked together since 2017 to make mobility in Karlsruhe easy to access and possible to book via smartphones. Using the KVV.mobil app – powered by moovel, passengers can book tickets for buses and trains from the Karlsruher Verkehrsverbund and can also rent bikes from Fächerrad (nextbike). During IT-Trans, the moovel on-demand shuttle was integrated into the app as an additional mobility option. The app gives the user an overview of all available mobility options in their city – and makes it easy to compare travel times and prices. The KVV.mobil app – powered by moovel is available for free in the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store.

2017 was most successful year so far with record unit sales, revenue and EBIT Significant growth in unit sales planned for 2018 Camper-van producer Hymer, a longstanding partner of Mercedes-Benz Vans, will be the biggest customer for the new Sprinter – supply contract signed for several thousand vehicles Intensive cooperation between Hymer and Mercedes-Benz Vans on development of new Sprinter opens up additional growth potential in camper-van segment With the adVANce strategic initiative, Mercedes-Benz Vans is changing from a pure vehicle producer into a provider of complete transport and mobility solutions Mercedes-Benz Vans continues to push forward with its electric strategy – first pilot projects with Hermes starting in Hamburg and Stuttgart New eVAN Ready app offers customers help in deciding on the electrification of their fleets Volker Mornhinweg, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans: “The foundation of this success is our ‘Mercedes-Benz Vans goes global’ strategy. With it, we are securing our sustainable growth as well as systematically utilizing new business potential.” Stuttgart – Mercedes-Benz Vans once again achieved records for unit sales, revenue and EBIT in 2017. Daimler’s van division handed over a total of approximately 401,000 vans and multipurpose vehicles to its customers (2016: 359,100). This represents significant growth of 12 percent and means that the division has posted growth in unit sales for the past five years and has now had four consecutive record years. Mercedes-Benz Vans increased its revenue in 2017 to the new high of 13.2 billion euros (2016: 12.8 billion euros, plus three percent). Earnings (EBIT) of 1,181 million euros were also at a best-ever level (2016: €1,170 million euros). Despite high investment in the expansion and renewal of the product portfolio and new services, the return on sales of 9.0 percent was at the targeted level (2016: 9.1 percent).
Volker Mornhinweg, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans: “The foundation of this success is our ‘Mercedes-Benz Vans goes global’ strategy. With it, we are securing our sustainable growth as well as systematically utilizing new business potential. We made significant investments in 2017 and will do the same also in 2018.”
At the beginning of last year, Mercedes-Benz Vans announced investments totaling more than two billion euros for the years 2017 and 2018. The main areas of investment include the new Mercedes-Benz Pickup X-Class, the new Sprinter large van and innovative complete system solutions in connection with the vehicles from Mercedes-Benz Vans.
Transformation into a provider of complete transport and mobility solutions
“We successfully entered the global growth segment of mid-size pickups with the market launch of our new X-Class in late 2017. Our next market launch will be of the new Sprinter in June. Our new flagship also marks a turning point, because the new Sprinter is our first fully connected total-system solution. With it, we are for the first time putting adVANce – our strategic future initiative – on the road. So Mercedes-Benz Vans is changing from a pure vehicle manufacturer into a provider of complete transport and mobility solutions for our customers,” continued Mornhinweg.
Significant growth in unit sales and revenue planned for 2018
Mercedes-Benz Vans plans for significant growth in unit sales and revenue in the year 2018. This will be driven for example by the new X-Class and the new Sprinter. Due to the continuation of high advance expenditure for the Sprinter model change, the production ramp-up of additional new models and negative exchange-rate effects, Mercedes-Benz Vans also anticipates a slight decrease in earnings.
New Sprinter conquers the camper-van market with front-wheel drive and tractor-head variants
With the new Sprinter, Mercedes-Benz Vans is consolidating its strong position in the growing market of camper vans. In Europe, a total of approximately 111,000 vehicles were registered in this segment in 2017, representing growth of 15 percent compared with the previous year. In Germany, approximately 41,000 camper vans were newly registered, an increase of 16 percent.
In order to participate even more in this development in the future, the new Sprinter is for the first time available also with front-wheel drive. The design of this variant yields an improved possible payload, opening up additional scope for bodybuilders. A lower floor makes getting in and out of the living and sleeping area of camper vans considerably more convenient. In addition, Mercedes‑Benz Vans now offers the new Sprinter also as a so-called tractor head, in which the powertrain, fuel tank and all other major components are located in front of or under the cab. This gives bodybuilders of high-quality and comfortable camper vans completely free rein to design the rear vehicle section.
“With the new Sprinter, we are naturally also keeping a close eye on our core business: The new tractor-head version of our bestseller opens up additional sales potential in the growth market of camper vans. I am therefore especially pleased that our longstanding partner Hymer will be the biggest customer for the new Sprinter,” added Mornhinweg.
Intensive collaboration with camper-van producer Hymer – agreement on a comprehensive supply relationship
The caravan and camper-van producer Hymer, which is based in Bad Waldsee in Baden-Württemberg, is likely to be the biggest customer for the new Sprinter. Mercedes-Benz Vans and Hymer have already concluded an agreement on the supply of a four-digit number of vehicles as the tractor-head variant in 2018. As of 2019, annual unit sales of the tractor-head version are expected to be in a high four-digit number. The first vehicles will be delivered to Hymer for the production of new camper vans in the coming weeks.
Mercedes-Benz Vans and Hymer cooperated intensively already in the development of the new tractor-head version. This allowed the vehicle’s specifications to be optimally adapted to the needs of bodybuilders in the camper-van segment.
Hymer was established in 1957 and is now Europe’s market leader in the premium segment for camper vans. Mercedes-Benz and Hymer have been collaborating for more than 40 years – the first Hymermobil was based on a Mercedes-Benz van. Hymer has trusted the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter as the basic vehicle for its camper vans since 1995.

New Sprinter makes the camper van into a smart home on wheels
The camper version is only one example of how digitization in the vehicle will open up new control possibilities for customers. In the future, the camper van can become a completely connected smart home on wheels – a genuine smart camper. The foundation for this intelligent connection of the basic vehicle and the camper body is a new interface module. This allows all camper functions to be controlled from one place – optionally via the infotainment system in the vehicle or via smartphone. In this way, Mercedes-Benz creates the possibility to connect vehicle and living space into a smart unit – something so far unique in the camper-van market.
Mercedes-Benz Vans continues to push forward with the electrification of its portfolio
With its adVANce future initiative, Mercedes-Benz Vans is changing from a producer of globally successful vans into a provider of complete system solutions for the transport of goods and persons – and is thus a pioneer in the industry. The van division is pursuing the goal of developing new business models and tailored solutions for various industries and their customers. A key component of adVANce is the electric strategy of Mercedes-Benz Vans. For example, orders have been taken for the eVito since November 2017 and deliveries will start in the second half of 2018. The electric version of the new Sprinter will follow in 2019. In parallel, the division offers its customers comprehensive advice on the electrification of their fleets, the required charging infrastructure and supplementary vehicle services.
One example of such full cooperation is the strategic partnership with Hermes, a logistics service provider. Pilot projects are currently starting in Hamburg and Stuttgart and will involve the first of 1,500 electric vans. The cooperation will then be extended to cover other urban areas.
New eVAN Ready app helps customers to decide
For van customers who are not yet convinced whether electric mobility is the right drive system for their business operations, Mercedes-Benz Vans now offers the eVAN Ready app. This free smartphone app records real routes driven by a user, analyzes the mobility patterns and compares them with numerous parameters of the eVito, and in the future also the eSprinter. This is important, because commercial users have widely differing user profiles. For example, a service technician responsible for an entire region has completely different range requirements from those of an urban parcel delivery driver, who operates on short routes that can be planned well in advance.
Speed and acceleration are therefore recorded by the new app as well as stops and long breaks. The app also records environmental parameters such as temperature and altitude profile. The vehicle’s range and the expected energy consumption can then be calculated. The analysis also takes into consideration the available charging points and calculates the additional charging and energy requirements. As an option, commercial customers can also include their typical loads and gross vehicle weights in the calculation. This results in a realistic and meaningful user profile.

Daimler Mobility Services presents itself with the brands car2go, moovel, mytaxi and Blacklane at the tech festival in Texas Mobility Cube in Palm Park under the umbrella „On the edge to autonomous mobility“ moovel Lab presents „Who Wants to Be a Self-Driving Car“ project Daimler Mobility Services, which encompasses all mobility services provided by Daimler, will be represented by the car2go, moovel, and mytaxi brands at this year’s SXSW. Rounding off the mobility trio will be Blacklane, a holding of Daimler Mobility Services. Together, the four mobility providers will present their portfolios in the Mobility Cube in Palm Park under the motto of “On the edge to autonomous mobility.”
Getting from A to B the easy way – with a car sharing vehicle, by taxi, rental bike, chauffeur-driven limousine, or public transportation: the mobility brands Blacklane, car2go, moovel, and mytaxi have just the right services on offer. With car2go, moovel, and mytaxi represented in more than 100 cities in Europe, North America, and China, between them they boast a total of 17.8 million registered customers.
Visitors to the Mobility Cube in Palm Park will have the opportunity to meet experts on the subject of mobility, and outside the Cube, they can explore the world through the eyes of an autonomous vehicle thanks to the current moovel lab project “Who Wants to Be a Self-Driving Car?”. Information from sensors and a 3D camera is visualized in a pair of virtual reality glasses, enabling visitors to steer the unconventional vehicle through the park.
Daimler Mobility Services paving the way for a future with autonomous vehicles
Daimler AG is seen as a pioneer and market leader in innovative mobility services, with almost 18 million customers using the services offered by car2go, moovel, and mytaxi to get from A to B. And thus shaping the urban mobility of tomorrow.
Daimler Mobility Services will continue to expand its mobility portfolio and customer base, while enabling users to benefit further from the pooling of mobility products. Following a total of 24 million rental transactions in 2017 alone, car2go was able to collate a great deal of information about customer requirements. This information forms a valuable basis for Daimler’s CASE strategy. car2go, for example, uses algorithms to predict mobility demands and allow for targeted control of fleets. Know-how is an essential element when it comes to controlling autonomous vehicle fleets.
Daimler’s mobility services are based on three pillars:
car2go: Worldwide, car2go has three million customers and a fleet of 14,000 vehicles, making it the market leader in flexible car sharing. On average, one car2go rental begins every 1.2 seconds. With vehicles from the Mercedes-Benz brand now available too, the choice has become even more attractive. Since June 2017, when online driving license validation was introduced, customers in all European markets have been able to register for and directly access the car2go service entirely online. moovel: The corporate start-up is developing an operating system for urban mobility that offers access to a range of different mobility services – including booking and payment. In Germany, the mobility app combines public transportation, car2go, mytaxi, bicycle rentals, and Deutsche Bahn. In the USA, the company’s moovel transit product portfolio makes it the market leader for mobile ticketing and payment solutions for public transportation authorities. With moovel on-demand, the moovel Group has been offering a platform for intelligent ride sharing and pooling since December 2017. moovel has almost four million users. mytaxi: By merging with British taxi app Hailo in 2016 and taking over Taxibeat in Greece (02/2017) and Clever Taxi in Romania (06/2017), the number of customers has been increased to more than 11 million (end of 2017). With more than 10 million downloads worldwide, over 120,000 registered drivers, and availability in more than 70 cities across 11 European countries, mytaxi is the leading taxi booking app in Europe. Taxi apps, which enable users to book and pay for taxis via smartphone, are proving increasingly popular. Almost 30 percent of customers in Germany, for example, now book taxis using a smartphone app. Moreover, Daimler Mobility Services holds stakes in Careem, Chaffeur Privé, Flixbus, Turo and Via as well as Blacklane. Next to car2go, moovel and mytaxi, Blacklane will be present in the Mobility Cube in Austin:
Blacklane: The global professional driver service Blacklane is the perfect solution for the first and last mile of travelers’ journeys. Blacklane gives passengers peace of mind and comfort in more than 50 countries, 250 cities, and from 500 airports worldwide. The company offers top quality at fair prices that are calculated at the time of booking, and include all fees and tips. All drivers are commercially licensed and insured. Through innovative technology and multilingual customer service, Blacklane coordinates thousands of premium vehicles in real time – around the clock.

Fuel consumption combined: 13.1 – 5.2 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined 299 – 0 g/km; power consumption combined 13.1 – 13.0 kWh/100 km*Geneva. At the 88th Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz is presenting a slew of world premieres in a clear demonstration that the brand with the three-pointed star offers vehicles to suit all needs. First to be unveiled was the all-new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé (fuel consumption combined: 11.2-9.1 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 256-209 g/km[1]), which augments the successful AMG GT family with another member. Also celebrating its world premiere was the new Mercedes-AMG G 63 (fuel consumption combined: 13.1 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 299 g/km), the new generation of the off-road legend by Mercedes-AMG. Further highlights in Geneva include the extensively redesigned C-Class. The bestseller with the three-pointed star appears with new, even more efficient engines. Also on show for the first time is a pre-production version of the first plug-in diesel hybrid, which is set to feature in both the C-Class and the E-Class. The new Mercedes-AMG C 43 (fuel consumption combined: 9.4-9.1 l/100 km; CO2emissions combined: 214-209 g/km1) guarantees compelling performance. Plus, the presentation of smart EQ fortwo (combined power consumption: 13.0-12,9 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km) and the smart EQ forfour (combined power consumption: 13.2-13.1 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km) sees the inventor of the automobile take the next step towards the electrification of its entire model line-up by 2022.
More space, more power, more goose bumps – the all-new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé delivers a whole new dimension of driving and expands the AMG model line-up. The new coupé is the first four-door sports car from Affalterbach and forms a direct link to the legendary and highly successful SLS and AMG GT models. A further vehicle developed entirely in-house by Mercedes-AMG, it unites unique design, excellent comfort and phenomenal sports car technology with an athletic, four-door fastback layout. It thus offers more space and greater usability. The consistent expansion of the AMG GT family by the four-door coupé therefore opens up the sports car segment to those customers seeking a vehicle they can use every day without having to give up the unique performance of Mercedes-AMG.
The all-new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé delivers a very special driving experience across the board and ensures a confident and refined presence in all areas of life, with exceptional performance and a top speed of 315 km/h. Modern, powerful in-line 6 and V8 engines with a power spectrum ranging from 320 kW (435 hp) to 470 kW (639 hp) unleash completely new driving experiences and pair compelling performance figures with contemporary efficiency.
“There are enough cars out there that are a moving compromise. The all-new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé certainly is not. There’s plenty of space in the back – and plenty of performance in the front,” says Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. “With the all-new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé, we are adding another great option to our portfolio. It now offers more variety and choice than ever.”
Mercedes-AMG G 63 – new generation of the performance off-road vehicle
The G 63 underscores its unique position among performance off-road vehicles with its powerful drive, all-new AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension, AMG-specific driving programmes and new interior with optional Widescreen Cockpit. The basis for the hallmark AMG Driving Performance both on- and off-road is the 430 kW (585 hp) 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine, the rear-biased all-wheel drive (40:60) with three differential locks, the extremely fast-shifting 9-speed automatic transmission, the double-wishbone independent front suspension and adaptive damping. The sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds is a clear demonstration of its outstanding performance credentials. The reinterpretation of the unmistakeable design sets characteristic accents with the exclusive AMG radiator grille, flared wheel arches, distinctive side pipes on the exhaust system and wheels measuring up to 22 inches.
“With Mercedes-Benz Cars, the customer has got the choice,” says Britta Seeger, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Marketing & Sales. “We want to offer a tempting solution for every customer: from city car to off-road legend, from AMG performance to Maybach luxury, whether you are a geek or a family dad or a businesswoman.”
Mercedes-Benz C-Class – new engine line-up for the bestseller
Mercedes-Benz’s most successful model range starts its fifth year of production with an extensive array of upgrades, including stylish revisions to the exterior and interior design. The electronic architecture is completely new. The customer sees this in the user experience, with an optional fully digital instrument display and multimedia systems with tailor made information and music. The assistance systems are now on the same level as those in the S-Class.
One highlight of technology and efficiency is the pre-production version of the new diesel plug-in hybrids in the C- and E-Class. It marks the first time Mercedes-Benz has paired an externally chargeable hybrid system with a diesel engine. The union of the new OM 654 four-cylinder diesel engine with the latest-generation 9-speed 9G-TRONIC hybrid transmission sets a notable technology highlight. 90 kW of electrical power, an additional 400 Nm of electric torque and electric range of around 50 km in the NEDC will raise the experience of local mobility with zero emissions to a new level.
With four body variants, three power levels and two types of powertrain, the C-Class is Mercedes-AMG’s most multi-faceted and successful model range. Extensive upgrades make the entry-level models, C 43 4MATIC Saloon (fuel consumption combined: 9.1 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 209 g/km[2] ) and Estate (fuel consumption combined: 9.4 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 214 g/km2), now even more attractive. The AMG grille featuring the twin-blade design, the powerfully sculpted front skirt and the new rear skirt with round double end pipes provide visual enhancement to the new C 43 models and position them even more expressively. The interior benefits from the optional fully digital cockpit with exclusive AMG instruments and the new generation of AMG steering wheels. The 3.0-litre V6 biturbo engine now produces 287 kW (390 hp). Together with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission and rear-biased AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive, the potent drivetrain combines agile performance with long-distance comfort.
“The new C-Class is available with most of the comfort attributes of the S-Class, all of its intelligent drive features – including its automated driving functions – and even more driving fun,” says Ola Källenius, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. “We believe plug-in hybrids are more than a bridging technology. With our modular Mercedes engine portfolio, we can create a perfect electrified solution for every application. We will have more than 50 electrified vehicle variants by 2022.”
smart EQ fortwo und forfour – innovative, intelligent and electric
Mercedes-Benz Cars is starting its electric offensive precisely where it is most urgently needed – in the city. The smart EQ fortwo and forfour are integrated into the Mercedes-Benz EQ family with the “edition nightsky”. smart has already been designated an all-electric brand in North America, and is now following this up in Europe and the rest of the world. The aim is the electrification of everyday life – across the board. Presented in Geneva alongside smart EQ were the “smart EQ control” apps and the 22 kW rapid charger.
A-Class – the benchmarks in the compact class
The new Mercedes-Benz A-Class is as young and dynamic as ever, but more grown up and comfortable than ever before. It completely redefines modern luxury in the compact class and revolutionises design from the inside. Technologically, the new A-Class sets itself at the very forefront not only with MBUX – Mercedes-Benz User Experience – but also with a range of functions that were previously the preserve of the luxury class, enabling semi-automated driving in certain situations for the first time.
