2019 Honda Insight Launched Into Production at Greensburg, Indiana Plant

15 May 2018, 6:39 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Car Profile

Succeeding both the Insight and Civic Hybrid, the 2019 Insight has a lot to live up to. But fortunately for Honda’s hybridized compact sedan, the Insight is capable of 55 miles per gallon in the city (projected estimate) thanks to the best-in-class power-to-weight ratio. Not bat for the fifth electrified Honda model launched in the past 18 months, right?
17 photosFollowing its debut in prototype flavor at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show in January, the newcomer is now in production at the automaker’s Indiana plant in Greensburg. Three more plants in Ohio support the Insight production. The Russells Point facility manufactures the twin-electric motor drive unit, the battery is assembled in Marysville, and the 1.5-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine is made in Anna.
To support Insight production in Greensburg, the plant added 19,200 square feet to accommodate the in-house subassembly of the vehicle’s front-end module. The modular approach started with the 2016 Honda Civic, and it’s also used by the CR-V crossover and Accord sedan. The Greensburg complex is also responsible for the installation of the high-voltage wiring, battery unit, and power control system.
“The new Honda Insight exemplifies our growing investment in the production of electrified vehicles in America and our associates in Indiana are proud to play a key role in this initiative,” declared Isao Matsuzaki, president of Honda Manufacturing of Indiana. “As the lead plant for Insight production globally, we are committed to delivering the quality and reliability that our customers expect.”
As we wait for the Japanese automaker to publish the MSRP of the 2019 Insight, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty. At 151 hp and 197 lb-ft combined, the hybrid sedan is almost as powerful as the Civic 2.0-liter (158 hp) but torquier (138 lb-ft). Stepping up to the 1.5-liter turbo (174 hp and 162 lb-ft) is also to the advantage of the Civic in terms of ponies, but twisting force continues to favor the new Insight.
The previous generation was a direct rival to the Toyota Prius, and based on the fuel-economy estimates for the newcomer, the Insight shouldn’t be afraid of the outgoing Prius (54 mpg city). On the other hand, the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid in Blue specification returns 57 miles per gallon in city driving.

2019 Subaru Ascent Starts Production in Indiana, Arriving at Dealers in June

8 May 2018, 14:10 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Car Profile

Remember the Tribeca? Subaru is at it again with the Ascent, sporting three rows of seats and enough space for eight passengers. The newest Subaru of them all is now in production at the Lafayette plant in Indiana, with stateside dealers informed that the first examples of the mid-size crossover SUV would be delivered in June 2018.
33 photos“The Subaru Ascent is a great addition to our product lineup,” declared Tom Easterday, senior executive vice-president of the assembly plant. “Production of this outstanding new family vehicle allowed us to create hundreds of new jobs at SIA, and also at our suppliers in Indiana and across the country.”
Now that the Ascent has been welcomed into the family, Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. expects production to total 400,000 vehicles per year. Since 1989, the Lafayette facility and its associates have built more than five million vehicles.
The roomiest Subaru ever also happens to be the most expensive in the range, starting at $31,995 ($32,970 including destination). To put that into greater perspective, the WRX comes in on second place ($26,995 without destination charge), while the Outback and BRZ kick off at $25,895 and $25,595, respectively.
There are four trim levels to choose from, including the Premium, Limited, and Touring. Even the entry-level Ascent comes with key features such as Symmetrical AWD with X-Mode, EyeSight driver-assist technology, Starlink infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 18-inch wheels, and black-painted roof rails.
At the other end of the spectrum, the Touring ($44,695) comes with Java Brown leather-trimmed upholstery, second-row captain’s chairs, TomTom satellite navigation, 792 watts and 14 speakers for the Harman Kardon premium audio system, panoramic power moonroof, and a 180-degree front-view camera system.
Proven up to 5,000 pounds in terms of towing capacity, the Ascent is a sport utility vehicle for the long haul. To this effect, there’s one engine-and-transmission combination available.
The four-cylinder direct-injected 2.4-liter engine churns out 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet thanks to turbocharging, translating to 27 miles per gallon on the highway and 21 in the city. The Lineartronic CVT, meanwhile, is designed to make driving effortless both in the urban jungle and on the open road.

2019 Ford Focus Going Into Production In June, Here's What To Expect

25 Feb 2018, 18:55 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Car Profile

Late 2010. That’s when the third-generation Focus went into production, which is a long time ago. All eyes are on the Focus Mk4 for a while now, especially after Ford announced that the Focus RS will cross the great divide at the beginning of April.
14 photosThe Ford Motor Company confirmed that the Focus Mk4 will skip the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, with the big reveal scheduled for April in Germany. The home of Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz is where the newcomer will be manufactured, with the stomping ground of the compact-sized model being the Saarlouis Body and Assembly Plant.
Phase one of production is scheduled for June 2018. The five-door hatchback is the first body style that will come off the assembly line, in no less than four trim levels: Trend, Trend Business, Titanium, and ST-Line. On the drivetrain front, customers will be offered a six-speed manual and an optional automatic transmission with eight forward gears.
Engines, you ask? Two will be offered at first, coming in the form of the 1.0-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder turbo (85, 100, and 125 horsepower) and the 1.5-liter EcoBlue turbo diesel (95 and 120 horsepower). But that’s not the end of the story.
Phase two of production will unfold in September 2018. That’s when Ford of Europe will start making the station wagon body style alongside the Vignale trim level. The beginning of autumn will see the Focus Mk4 gain a handful more engines, starting with the 1.5-liter EcoBoost with 150 and 175 horsepower, respectively. The third and final engine, for the time being, is the 2.0-liter EcoBlue, which is anticipated to develop 150 horsepower.
On the matter of features, Ford’s all-new Focus will benefit from 8 previously unavailable driving-assist technologies, FordPass Connect, wireless charging for Qi-enabled smartphones, hands-free tailgate, head-up display, B&O Play premium audio system, and a panoramic roof.
The Focus Active, which is a faux crossover of sorts, is expected to arrive at the beginning of 2019. On an ending note, look forward to three new exterior colors: Azure Blue, Island Blue, and Millenium Gray.

Wrangler-like Jeep Scrambler Pickup Truck To Hit U.S. Dealers In April 2019

25 Mar 2018, 9:27 UTC · by Mircea Panait
/ Home / News / Car Profile

With production scheduled to start in November at the Toledo Assembly Plant, the Scrambler (JT) is the first Jeep pickup truck in a long, long time. But as it happens, U.S. dealers will start getting the Wrangler-inspired workhorse in April next year.
24 photosAutomotive News received the information from an unspecified Fiat Chrysler Automobiles dealer, which means that stateside customers will get behind the wheel of the Scrambler in just around a year’s time. Otherwise, the dealer meeting from where the information originates “was made up of a recap of 2017 sales results and largely optimistic projections for 2018 sales.”
The Scrambler is the first Jeep-branded pickup since the Comanche. Codenamed MJ, the Cherokee-based truck was made from 1985 to 1992. Chrysler decided to discontinue the Comanche two years prior to the stop of production, as sales were dropping at an alarming rate. It’s during this time the full-size segment started to gain more traction than ever before.
The Scrambler borrows quite a number of oily bits from the fifth-generation Ram 1500 pickup. The rear suspension, for example, features 1500-like shock absorbers. But more interestingly, the Dana-sourced solid front axle is related to the Wrangler’s setup. That should keep the off-road crowd happy, right?
Being a lifestyle-oriented alternative to the 2019 Ram 1500, the Scrambler is further believed to come with three roof options. Leaked documents suggest that in addition to the body-painted three-piece hard top, the Scrambler will also be offered with a black three-piece hard top, as well as the Premium Black Sunrider Soft Top.
Two engine options are all but confirmed, with the mild-hybrid Pentastar V6 acting as the entry-level choice. Those who need more torque will be offered the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6. Sorry folks, no word on the Hurricane turbo!
As for capability, the Scrambler is believed to have a towing capacity of up to 6,500 pounds (2,948 kilograms) in Base trim with the diesel engine. Payload, on the other hand, is rated at 1,400 pounds (635 kilograms) for the same configuration.
