NEW DELHI: Even as Delhi government’s Electric Vehicle Policy completes two years next month, a new record has been created, with as many as 29,604 EVs having been sold in Delhi in 2022 till date. This is the highest ever annual figure, with more than five months still left for the year to end.
The EVs sold in Delhi this year already constitute 18.6 per cent of all EVs registered in the capital till date. Sales first saw a major jump in 2016 with 21,690 EVs sold, compared with the 3,565 registered a year ago. The number remained around the 20,000-mark, but the overall dip in vehicle sales in 2020 due to the Covid-19 outbreak saw EV numbers, too, come down to 12,381.
That year, on August 7, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal launched the EV policy with the aim of ensuring that 25 per cent of all new vehicle registrations by 2024 were of EVs. In August 2020, a total of 739 EVs were registered in Delhi and, from September 2020 to till date, 59,949 EVs have been sold in the city. The figure is 37.8 per cent of the total 1,58,578 EVs registered in Delhi till date.
The two years of the policy will be celebrated at the 4th Delhi EV Forum, to be hosted by the Dialogue and Development Commission (DDC) on August 10, in collaboration with RMI India. A report on the policy’s implementation will be presented and discussed at the forum, the DDC said in a statement. The government said that it will also launch a ‘Charging Infrastructure Action Plan for Delhi’ at the forum.
The government said that the ‘Switch Delhi EV Awards’ will be presented to showcase and felicitate the leaders across 15 categories who are building Delhi as India’s EV capital. It said that in 2022, EV sales have been averaging close to 10 per cent of the total new vehicle sales monthly, by far the highest in India, with March 2022 witnessing a high of 12.5 per cent. The current year is witnessing more than 144 EVs being registered every day on average, compared with around 71 EVs sold per day on average last year.
“Delhi’s emergence as the leading state in India in EV adoption is strongly rooted in consultation and discussion with experts and industry stakeholders,” Delhi’s transport minister Kailash Gahlot said. “The Delhi government has been continuously incorporating the voices of the e-mobility ecosystem in the EV policy, and we will felicitate the stakeholders in the upcoming forum for their contributions towards making the Delhi EV policy an exemplary success so far,” he said.
“Over the last two years, the platform of Delhi EV Forum has successfully brought together over 200 stakeholders and implemented the principle of participatory governance in Delhi’s journey toward becoming the EV capital of India,” vice chairperson, DDC Delhi Jasmine Shah said
