The Volkswagen commercial vehicle holding company Traton is under pressure due to supply bottlenecks and higher procurement prices. Despite an increase in sales of almost a third to 18 billion euros compared to the same period last year, the adjusted operating result fell by 29 percent to 798 million euros in the first half of the year, as the umbrella company for the truck brands MAN and Scania announced on Thursday in Munich.
The truck manufacturer MAN even had to stop production for weeks because the supply of cable harnesses from the Ukraine came to a standstill because of the Russian invasion there. Nevertheless, the sales figures rose by nine percent to 137,000 trucks and buses because the sales of the US truck manufacturer Navistar were included in the figures for the first time. However, incoming orders were four percent down on the previous year.

“The availability of semiconductors and other important components is slowly improving, but has not yet reached normal levels,” said Traton boss Christian Levin. “At the same time, the prices for raw materials and energy are rising, logistics capacities are scarce.” He still expects a “considerable” increase in sales figures for the year as a whole, previously there was talk of “strong” growth. However, Traton is sticking to its forecast of an adjusted operating return on sales of 5.0 to 6.0 percent this year. After the first half of the year it is only 4.4 (previous year: 8.3) percent.
Including special effects, Traton’s operating result was significantly higher than the previous year at EUR 661 (455) million. In the first half of the year, depreciation in connection with the Ukraine war, among other things, had an impact, totaling 137 million euros. In the previous year, Traton had set aside 672 million for the conversion of MAN.
