Detroit auto show to include new air mobility technology display

The Detroit auto show this year will focus on more than rubber meeting the road.

Organizers at this year’s show now have their eyes trained toward the sky as well.

The North American International Auto Show will include a new “Air Mobility Experience” featuring flight displays by six air mobility innovation companies. 

The experience, which will be hosted over the Detroit River in Hart Plaza and in Huntington Place Sept. 14-25, will include hoverboard, jet suit and electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft technology displays.

“This exciting addition to the show is a natural extension of the evolving transportation ecosystem, especially as people continue to look for creative ways to expand personal mobility,” said Detroit Auto Show Chairman Joe Lunghamer in a news release. “We’ll give auto show audiences a taste of the future today with a look at the whole spectrum of mobility — from the thrill of human propulsion to amphibious vehicles you can keep in your backyard to EVs leading the industry’s transformation.”  

Displays will include:

  • AIR from Tel Aviv, Israel, which will display its AIR ONE two-seater eVTOL aircraft

  • Airspace Experience Technologies from Detroit, which will display its Sigma-6 eVTOL aircraft 

  • AERWINS Technologies from Wilmington, Delaware, and A.L.I. Technologies from Tokyo, which will make the U.S. debut of its XTURISMO Hoverbike. 

  • Gravity Industries from Salisbury, England, which will display its patented Jet Suit that produces 1,000 horsepower

  • ICON Aircraft from Vacaville, California, which will display its ICON A5 — a two-seat, amphibious light-sport aircraft with retractable wings 

  • Omni Hoverboards from Montreal, Canada, which will demonstrate its eVTOL Hoverboard
