According to insiders, BMW also purchases cylindrical batteries for its electric cars from the Chinese manufacturer EVE Energy. EVE has signed relevant contracts and is a key battery supplier for cars coming onto the market from 2025, a person familiar with the process said, according to the Reuteres news agency.
The batteries were similar in format to Tesla batteries, the insiders said. The US electric car pioneer started manufacturing cylindrical 4680 batteries this year.
The Tesla cells have a diameter of 46 millimeters and are 80 millimeters long. According to Tesla, they should be cheaper to produce and promise a longer range compared to conventional 2170 format batteries.
EVE already supplies batteries to BMW in China. The company initially did not respond to a Reuters inquiry about the report. BMW announced battery information for early September and did not comment further.
