Mahindra & Mahindra has today announced the prices of the new Scorpio Classic, the new avatar of its iconic brand, Scorpio. The SUV with refreshed design, contemporary interiors, built-in technology and a new powerful engine, amongst other features is available in two variants, Classic S and Classic S11.
While the Classic S variant has an introductory price of Rs 11.99 lakh, the Classic S11 has a sticker price of 15.49 lakh (ex-showroom)
At first glance, the new Scorpio Classic looks pretty similar to the outgoing model. However, Mahindra has given it a refreshed front grille with the new ‘Twin Peaks’ logo. There is also a redesigned front bumper that gets a silver skid plate as well as a new design for the fog lamp housing.
In profile, the Scorpio Classic gets the same design for the 17-inch alloy wheels as the existing Scorpio, but it now gets a diamond-cut finish. Mahindra has also added dual-tone cladding on the doors. The rear of the Scorpio Classic is unchanged, save for the signature Tower LED tail-lamps that are now red in colour from the previous black.
Interior and features
Even inside, the changes are minimal over the outgoing Scorpio. It gets a new 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that is now Android-based and supports screen mirroring. The dashboard and centre console now get wooden inserts, and the steering wheel has a leatherette finish. While the older model got a grey and black interior, the Scorpio Classic gets a black and beige combination.
The Mahindra Scorpio Classic is being offered with three seating layout options – two 7-seaters and one 9-seater. While one 7-seater option gets two captain’s seats in the second row with a bench in the third row, the other gets a bench in the second row and jump seats for two in the third. The 9-seater, meanwhile, gets a bench in the second row and jump seats for four in the rear.
In terms of features, the Scorpio Classic gets cruise control, rear parking sensors, AC vents for the second row and steering-mounted controls. As for safety, the Mahindra Scorpio Classic will be offered with two airbags, and the carmaker has confirmed more will be added in the future to comply with the new norms.
Powertrain and suspension
Under the hood, the body-on-frame SUV gets the new 2.2-litre, turbo-diesel, Gen 2 mHawk engine that is good for 132hp and 300Nm of torque. Mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, it puts the power down through the rear wheels. The updated engine is 55kg lighter than before and Mahindra claims that it has improved fuel economy by 14 percent.
To improve its handling, the Scorpio Classic gets a bunch of updates. Mahindra has increased roll stiffness to reduce body roll, improved the high speed handling of the SUV, and upgraded the steering input.
The Scorpio Classic comes with a new two-tone beige-and-black interior theme, classic wood pattern console, and premium quilted upholstery. The vehicle also has a new 22.86 cm touchscreen infotainment system with phone mirroring and other modern functionalities. Available in five body colour options: Red Rage, Napoli Black, Dsat Silver, Pearl White and a newly introduced Galaxy Grey, The Scorpio Classic will be sold alongside the All-New Scorpio-N which was launched in June this year.
