- Mercedes-Benz and U.S. game developer and publisher Riot Games to continue their League of Legends Esports partnership for another three years
- The Championship Ring, created jointly in 2021, will become an integral part of the annual World Championship
- The iconic ring gets a sustainable highlight: a diamond produced from CO2 extracted directly from the atmosphere
Mercedes-Benz continues to back esports. Since 2020 Mercedes-Benz has been the exclusive automotive partnership of the global League of Legends Esports events organized by Riot Games. All measures and activations are intended for the further development of the global esports culture and thus strengthen the worldwide LoL community. The annual highlight of the partnership is known as the “Worlds”, the official world championship for League of Legends Esports. The host location for Worlds rotates across different countries and regions around the globe each year. The 2022 edition will be held in North America.
Last year, the design teams of the two partners created a Championship Ring for the winning team. “Winning the hearts of gaming fans is an exciting challenge. Together with Riot Games we are in the best condition to inspire the community and to successfully shape the future of esports. We are therefore looking forward to continuing our cooperation – and to remaining an integral part of the global League of Legends family,” said Britta Seeger, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, responsible for Marketing & Sales.
In the further development of the Championship Ring, Mercedes-Benz is relying on a cooperation with Aether Diamonds. With the help of the U.S. company, the iconic ring design will be complemented with a sustainable diamond in the center of the ring. Aether Diamonds are made from carbon captured directly from the atmosphere. In addition, the partners Mercedes-Benz and Riot Games are committed to various social and ecological issues. Thus, in 2019, the game maker founded the “Riot Games Social Impact Fund”, a non-profit engine for Riot’s global social impact efforts that has distributed over $23M in grants to nonprofits worldwide and supports more than 400 organizations across 25 regions.
“Mercedes-Benz is synonymous with excellence, and over the last three years, their partnership has helped elevate and celebrate the biggest moments across our sport,” said Naz Aletaha, Global Head of League of Legends Esports at Riot Games. “The passion and creativity Mercedes-Benz brings to every collaboration is second to none, and we’re thrilled to extend our relationship and continue to join efforts on more high-impact moments for LoL Esports and our community.”
In addition to the Championship Ring, there are other joint highlights planned around Worlds this year, leveling up the LoL Esports experience for fans. Worlds begins with the Play-In rounds September 29 in Mexico City, then continues in New York with Groups and Quarterfinals, followed by Semifinals in Atlanta, GA, and concluding with the Worlds final November 5 in San Francisco. One of the highlights of the finals will be the Trophy Ceremony, presented by Mercedes-EQ – including the handover of the Championship Ring to the winning team.
