In the summer of a year ago, Opel announced big plans. The small car manufacturer from Rüsselsheim, which is very focused on Europe, promised to enter the largest car market of all: China. “We promised that Opel would go global – and we’ll deliver,” stated the company boss at the time, Michael Lohscheller. However, it never came to that.
Lohscheller is no longer in office with the Hessians. And under his successor Florian Huettl, Opel is making a strategic U-turn. The China expansion has been canceled, as the Handelsblatt learned from three insiders.
The background is the growing geopolitical tensions between the communist leadership in Beijing on the one hand and the USA and the European Union on the other. Nationalist tendencies in China, the draconian zero-Covid policy and the escalation of the conflict over independence from Taiwan are making it difficult for Opel to enter the market. It is said in business circles that this turning point cannot simply be ignored.
