Toyota, Honda to pay connected-car patent fees to telecoms

TOKYO — Toyota Motor, Honda Motor and Nissan Motor will pay patent fees to Finland’s Nokia and other top telecom companies for wireless technology used to connect cars to the internet, Nikkei has learned.

Nokia and dozens of other telecom companies have demanded patent payments from Japanese carmakers for connected-car technology. This marks the first time that any Japanese carmaker has agreed to pay such license fees, marking a possible shift in their practice related to patents.
