Nagpur: The functioning of the city and district police apart from three Regional Transport Offices has come under scanner for ignoring safety of schoolchildren. Data obtained from state transport department revealed that at least 39% vehicles, including buses and vans, that ferry children are without fitness certificates.
Nagpur district, including both city and rural areas, has around 3,464 vans and buses registered with the transport department to ferry schoolchildren. Of these, 1,348 vehicles are without fitness certificate.
As per rule, a van should not carry more than 10 students (if they are less than 12 years of age), while autorickshaw should ferry up to five students. Even the Supreme Court had issued similar directives in this regard. But these are hardly being followed, thanks to inaction by both RTO and traffic police.
Apart from these, there are several unregistered private vans, cars and even thousands of autorickshaws that ferry children to schools and back home. Most of them could be seen overcrowded with children.
