“Made in Austria”: As a traditional supplier, Austria has enjoyed a high reputation in the global automotive sector for many years. The export rate for passenger cars manufactured in Austria is 90 percent. In Germany, too, vehicle manufacturers rely on the know-how and reliable quality standards from the neighboring country. With around 4,400 employees, BMW produces almost 1.1 million engines in Austria and the plant in Steyr is to start producing electric motors on a large scale by 2025. 600,000 electric motors are to roll off the production line every year.
Know-how made in Austria
The environment of the Austrian automotive industry is characterized by innovative companies with many years of experience. For example, the TTTech Group, technology leader in the field of robust networking platforms, started in 1998 as a spin-off from the Technical University of Vienna and has advanced to become a world-class company in the field of self-driving cars. In addition to numerous international partners, the German automotive groups Audi, VW and BMW also rely on the competence of the Austrian high-tech champion.
Manufacturers of systems for assisted driving (ADAS) and fully automated driving (AD) are also supported by the Austrian company AVL and numerous suppliers such as the ZKW Group. The Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) and the vehicle supplier ZKW Group are working on a high-performance control unit for the next generation of vehicles. It acts as the “brain” of the vehicle, so to speak, and is intended, among other things, to generate a 3D real-time model of its environment. The fact that the digital and vehicle industries are growing ever closer together is also evident at VIRTUAL VEHICLE, Europe’s largest research center for virtual vehicle development, which has long since made a name for itself worldwide.
innovation and quality
A look into the engine compartment of the Austrian automotive industry shows very clearly that the Alpine Republic has long since become one of the most important players on the way to future mobility. With a research quota of probably 3.26 percent in the current year, Austria occupies a top position internationally and is considered a “strong innovator”. In addition, the research premium of 14 percent is often decisive for both international corporations and start-ups when choosing a location.
