NEW DELHI: Soon, people who are in transferable jobs can get their existing vehicles registered under the BH (Bharat) series. Currently, such registration is allowed only for new vehicles.

The road transport ministry on Thursday issued a draft notification proposing to allow the existing vehicles having regular registration mark to be converted to BH series registration mark after payment of requisite tax.

A BH series registration number is valid throughout the country. Owners of vehicles with BH series registration numbers don’t need to apply for new registration when shifting from one state to another. This reduces hassles, paperwork and time.

The ministry said the changes in the Central Motor Vehicle Rules have been proposed in an endeavour to further improve the scope of BH series implementation in the country.

The BH series for vehicles was first introduced in September last year. As per the rule, a government or public sector unit employee can apply for this registration number and a private sector employee with offices in more than four states or Union Territories is also eligible.

As per the draft notification, the applicants would also be allowed to submit applications for this series either at the place of residence or place of work.

So far 24 states and UTs have rolled out the new BH series for vehicle registration and so far over 20,000 vehicles have been registered across the states.
