Hamburg as a test field for autonomous trucks

Hamburg was chosen as a test field for the automation of trucks in delivery traffic.

Not much is known about it yet, but the location: Hamburg becomes the first test field in Europe. Of the trend from the USA is now slowly reaching us.

In the USA, especially in the southern states, there is already a lot of practice in handing over freight to autonomous trucks. The leading companies in the industry have become involved in this field.

It is hardly surprising that Hamburg was chosen. Here there was already the HEAT project with self-propelled shuttles, which was the port Test field for 5G and for autonomous logistics. Now the test field for truck automation is also being built here.

The project is scheduled to last four years, but the exact route of the test field is still unknown. However, it is intended to connect the motorway with the port area. Not only autonomous trucks are to be tested on the test field, but also networking and the infrastructure.

The test field is also to be set up internationally and to cooperate with the motorway corridor from Rotterdam to Moss in the Netherlands. In this way, four borders are passed.

In addition to the city of Hamburg and the port, a number of companies and institutions are also involved in the test field. For example the manufacturers Volvo and DAF, the logistics company Gruber or various shipping companies. It is also financed by the EU and has a budget of 23 million euros.
