The UT administration has directed the public service vehicles (maxi cab, motor cab, buses) registered in the city to install vehicle location tracking (VLT) device and emergency button (panic button).
Ministry of road transport & highways (MoRTH) notified Motor Vehicle (Vehicle Location Tracking Device and Emergency Button) Order 2018 and made it mandatory that all public service vehicles are required to be fitted with VLT device and panic button under Rule 125(H) of Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. The state transport authority of Chandigarh started the implementation of VLT and emergency alert project from June 30, 2022.
“Accordingly, all public service vehicles registered in Chandigarh are required to install VLT device with panic buttons. These devices are checked at the time of fitness of vehicles and in future, state transport authority will also start challaning those without them. The devices have been installed in 35% public service vehicles registered in Chandigarh till date,” said a UT official. Two-wheelers, e-rickshaws and three-wheelers are exempted for installation by the MoRTH.
Location of vehicle is received and updated automatically on VLT & EA portal, so the real time location of vehicles can be monitored. “This is helpful in making the travelling safe, specially for women and children, as the panic button of vehicle can be pressed in emergency situation and the alert with real time location reaches the command & control centre in state transport authority as well as to emergency response support system and police in real time,” said the official.
The device is also helpful in monitoring whether a particular vehicle is being driven on its decided route or not.
Through portal of VLT & EA, speed of vehicles, reckless driving and violation of traffic rules can be monitored in real time, so it would be helpful in prevention of accidents.
“All the owners of public service vehicles (except the exempted categories of vehicles) are advised to install the VLTD & EA immediately. The public is advised to hire/use only those vehicles in which VLT Device along with panic button is fitted,” said the official.
