The number of electric vehicles (EVs) in Vizag city has increased in the past two years. On average, over 1,000 EVs were added a year during this period in city.

The number of EVs grew in the past two years when compared to previous years as a wide range of vehicles were made available by the manufacturers at different locations. While the electric two-wheelers registered the highest growth, cars are lagging in terms of growth percentage.

Speaking to TOI, deputy transport commissioner, Vizag, GC Raja Ratnam said as many as 2,025 electric vehicles were registered in the last two years, including 252 cars, in Vizag. The trend is quite increasing with the availability of electric vehicles in the market at economic prices. The EVs are also exempted from motor vehicles tax and fees. EVs below 25kw need not be registered. Electric vehicles are noise and air pollution-free and environment-friendly. We have been encouraging use of electric vehicles in city, Raja Ratnam added.

“I purchased an electric scooter a few months ago. The scooter is more convenient and efficient for personal transport such as going to office and market. Above all, the vehicle can be charged at home without having to depend on external charging infrastructure. I am sure that I am saving a good amount, at least 100 per day, by using electric scooter,” said Ch Anil Kumar, a resident of Vizag city.

Road Transport Authority (RTA) officials say that due to the fuel price rise, the share of EVs, particularly two-wheelers, will be increasing drastically in the coming days. “Running cost of EVs per km is around 1 whereas it is around 3 to 4 for petrol two-wheelers. Due to the competition among the EV (two-wheelers) manufacturers, the prices of EVs may further fall for the middle-income group people,” they added.
